Really sorry to hear that Patrick. What happened and when?

We are in the process of pursuing this at the moment. Hopefully I can look back upon this in the very near future and just see it as a mere speedbump on the road to success. Trying to be philosophical and all that type of thing.

Thanks for the sympathy. We're not entirely sure yet but it would seem a mismatched oil ring to the piston will be the cause. One of the biggest annoyances is the time I took off to run the engine in up to 500 miles in 2 days. I won't have that same opportunity next time so it will take a bit longer and we have a track day coming up in May which I'd really like to make. Don't like my chances though.
Oh, and the pic of the car from behind showing the 'RS turbo' are all factory parts just for a bit of fun.

You and me both Scott. I have no fear that the car will be up and running soon, just not as soon as I'd like of course. By now it would have been getting into some boost and really feeling it's potential. As I said before even on the low boost and rpm's it was feeling outstanding.

Patrick, very sorry to hear about the problems. For references that we all may need do you know what the piston to cylinder wall clearance was set at and what coating if any was on the piston?

Beautiful car and the only good thing is the liners are far easier to repair than the Alusil would have been.

Once it's all sorted I'll get all the specs onto this thread. I don't have them in my possession as my mechanic assembled it.

shouldnt be too bad since with darton sleeves you can finish the cylinder and if needed just get another JE piston for not much

Patrick, was curious as I have the original Darton Liners, not the mid, and after I had a headgasket leak I had a couple of score marks in the cylinder. They weren't caused by the headgasket leak nor incorrectly fitted rings. It appeared that the clearances were just a bit too tight. The first set up was .004 to .005 Inch. The block was honed out to .0065 inch and to my knowledge is fine. This was on a slightly smaller bore than you have and the pistons were coated. In my case the coating seemed to have minimized any damage as the honing took the marks out.

From my results I came to the conclusion that running the JE against the iron liners requires a pretty good clearance especially when you crank the boost up and generate the corresponding heat.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Ok well more is becoming apparent although we're still not 100% sure but based on what Dan has said that makes sense to me because my mechanic did his at .004 and had the same problems so we did mine at .006 and as you can see the same result but only on one cylinder not all 4 that he had. We are now contemplating .008! Our machinists have run .012 before but not on Porsche cars, but interestingly he said that we should have heard some piston slap at .006 and we didn't so maybe there is a correlation between JE's and the Mids with mismatched expansion rates? We will be trying different pistons, maybe Wossners, maybe something else. Damn frustrating to say the least.
