How close were the rod/rod bolts to the side of the girdle? Just curious if you sort of "quarter mooned" (die grinder) that area to make sure no contact, as it's really close.

Nice looking stuff, congrats on a job well done.

Ski, how about this close Luckily with the Arrow rods it allows the bolt to just, and I mean just, squeeze through. Thanks for the kind comments too but any plaudits must go to Sean for rebuilding it so well and so quickly once we had all the parts.

Dave, your skills never cease to amaze me.

yeah that's close. I know LR grinds that area to open it up. jwl, on his 2.8L stroker, had one of the Carillo rod bolts, just hit one of the little casting flaws when the car heated up. He heard a ticking sound when the car warmed up, couldn't find anything up top so he pulled the pan and found a "tiny shiny" mark on one very similar to yours there. He took a die grinder and cleaned all the casting imperfections and no more noise. Just something to park away for future reference.

I'm sure you will find out yourself how extremely hard it is to keep the larger capacity engine off boost. Those extra cubes seem to pass so much extra air to the turbo that you will be gingerly caressing the throttle like an expectant teenager faced with his first womanly breast , and knowing that if you press too hard, too soon things will get very messy very quickly

Nice analogy there Paul. We may have to keep this chat limited to after 11pm to censor out some of the youngsters in the pack. lol
Yes I remember Jon's running in procedure was very detailed and sounded difficult to uphold v's the temptation of getting on with it. My mechanic Bruce ideally or at least in theory says that after about 50-60k miles is when an engine is properly run in, so I won't be following that to the letter of the law! lol So anyway we shall see how long I can hold out. I just want to get the car back and drive it is all.

Gotta keep the thread on the first page just a little bit longer. lol
Drove the car a couple of times around a few blocks today. Feels great. It so obviously wants to be unleashed but that is all part of rebuilds, keeping your right foot under control during run in. The head/cam just wants to rev out and that is how it is designed, but the extra 500cc has given the car noticeably more torque so it should give a nice broad spread of power when we eventually get some serious rpms and psi together. Even with the ebc turned off and just running on the wastegate spring, there is plenty of linear response up to the 3500rpm we have gone to. Totally tractable so that's a nice result.
Pick her up tomorrow to take home for the first time in ages. WHOOHOOO!!!!
ST, I need you to give me that clue re the ZT2 soon if you so please.

Picked the car up yesterday and have already put 150 miles on the new engine. Just revving it to about 3.5-4k and only using the spring of the wastegate. Ebc is turned off but it's still getting about .4 bar. Car feels unbelievably more torquey (?) so even on these modest settings and rpm's you can feel the potential of the car just waiting to come out. So hopefully combined with the low down tq increase by the extra 500cc's, the cam/head/turbo will really come on song in the mid to upper range. Currently the rev limit is set to 7k and I can't wait to push it up there on full boost. The exhaust is pretty loud so it does get a few lookers when you drive through traffic. The nice thing is that you can go to a higher gear than normal and just drive away once you're on the move and it keeps the noise down a fair bit.
Anyway I'll keep updating as I'm sure there's one or two people interested. Sorry to those that aren't.

Thanks for the replies boys. I'll take some pic's this weekend and post them. You're right Paul about the fun. Even though your rebuild took way longer I'm sure it wasn't too long to forget how Lil felt before and after. Even just running it in you can feel the increase in capacity. I guess I shouldn't forget that I have shortened my overall gearing so that would help somewhat. I'm looking forward to some of the other Big Bore guys to start getting their cars on the road too. Rolex, Guns, RKD and others will make the Big Bore club official. It would be nice to hear from them but they've gone a bit quiet of late. Probably got too much work on. Good luck to them. The fun has just begun!

Thanks for keeping us updated Patrick. Looking forward to your impressions once you can run a bit of boost!

You and me both Scott! The frustrating thing is that there are so many varied recommendations for running in our engines so we are going to go on the more conservative side. There are some that suggest hitting it hard initially but I think this is really more relevant to race cars whose engines get torn down regularly. I can't afford this so it's a slower procedure for me.

Default This is starting to get really frustrating!!!

Some more pic's of the car the afternoon before it expired on the Hwy due to oiling issue. We're still investigating the cause...
