update: got the head cleaned and back today. the shop completely disassembled the head, removed the valves for inspection, and reported no damage to the head nor valves. i'll be putting the head back on the car sometime in the next two days.

now i'm debating wether i should use the stock gasket, or the cometic MLS gasket. anyone have suggestions? can the stock gasket handle 350whp/wtq?

If everything is clean and dry, studs are in good condition and torque the cylinderhead appropiately, then the stock gasket is just fine, as long as everything is tuned right (not just AFR but timing as well).

So am I. I have the same new turbo but his will be up and running much sooner...this is what has slowed me down on my rebuild. Still debating if I should smooth the 'kisses' or or pull another set of pistons from my other motor.

I think they'll be fine when I smooth them out. The 'bites' were all carboned over so repairs to the valves must have been made quite awhile before he wrecked the car this motor came from. All 4 pistons have these marks but this was the worst one.

update: got the new turbo installed. it's a tight fit, but it is a stock fit. i had to cut off the little bump on the top of the plastic alternator cover to get it to fit (the wire to the alternator was obstructing the compressor intake). i should have it all together and running by tomorrow and will let you all know how it goes.

okay the car is now running. so far i'm pleased with the performance. when i was running the boost settings for the stock turbo, this new turbo instantly overboosted when it hit 4500rpm and triggerred the failsafe, which shows how much faster and higher it spools. the kicker is that when it hit the failsafe at 20psi, it continued to spool to 25psi even after the wastegate was fully open and the spark and fuel have been cut off! that scared the crap out of me but apparantly the motor and headgasket are still okay. it shows how willing this turbo is to keep spinning, though, which means the transitional boost should be excellent.

since it's larger than the stock turbo, i thought i'd have to turn the boost settings up below 3krpm to get it to spool like the stock turbo, but it spools identical to the stock turbo with the stock settings right out of the box. i'm going to see if i can get it to spool even faster than stock, which will be a big surprise.

dyno results will be posted in the near future. so far i would recommend this turbo for anyone seeking maximum power with identical low spool characteristics as the stock turbo.

in the meanwhile, i didn't bother to clean out the oil in the muffler, thinking that it will just burn out and boy is it burning. there's a smokescreen behind me whenever the muffler gets hot enough. i've found it's a great way to get rid of tailgaters fast though.

That's excellent news. Did you notice at what rpm you made 1 bar? Other than the alternator shroud were the modified water/oil pipes provided a good fit? I'm really looking forward to your dyno results, keep us posted.
