Default front coilover question (those w/ helper springs?)

Installed a set of Bilstein "Escorts" up front and added helper springs to keep the springs in place when the car was unloaded on jack stands. Is there anything I should know that I missed - when turning the car around in the driveway for the first time I heard a noise that I can best describe only as "binding" - like the springs/helper springs moving around on the upper strut perch. Should helpers be installed on the bottom? Does it / would it even make a difference? I might just remove them altogether...nothing is rubbing or getting caught up - just sounds like tension on the spring / helper spring. Here is a pic, dont laugh if something is horribly wrong that I didnt catch.

the top mount spins freely right? when its all bolted up? The top cup isnt rubbing the mount but riding on the bearing?

That's an issue I have on my car, too, after I replaced my strut mounts. Basically, my coil sits too high - my mechanic suggested throwing in a spacer to bring the top perch down a hair. He had to do that on another vehicle which was having the same problems. I can't remember the exact place at which the spacer should go - I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

spacer would go between the bearing and the top cup for the coil to keep the cup from rubbing the mount- most likely.

In order from top to bottom: nut, upper strut mount, sleeve that rode on top of strut that slid into the strut mount bearing, upper perch, helper spring, spring, lower perch, etc...

Is that fairly normal to have a spacer there? I paged whakiewes to this thread as it was his former suspension, and I dont see how someone could have lived with this sound so I doubt it did it on his car...

I've got a similar set up, makes that noise, can't say it is pleasant, but I don't think it is a problem to worry about, quieter would be better though.

I have a similar setup without the helper springs and it makes the same binding noise - never been a problem.

i would ditch the springs myself- this is my second set of hypercoils on a 944 and you know how many times my car is on stands- never had a problem.

Sounds like a plan, I shall remove them I guess..thanks guys!

Just curious- What are you guys measuring from center of wheel to fender lip? I need to mess with the height, my pass side is sitting a bit higher than my driverside, no rubbing on the first "guess" try...

With coilovers, you are going to have some "spring pop." That's part of using a "racing" or semi "racing" suspension. On all the motons and other suspensions I have installed on cars, the helpers are on the bottom, not the top like you have in your picture. They all pop to a certain extent, some brands more than others. You will notice it more around town than out on a track of course.

Thanks Doc, I guess since this was my first time pulling it out of the garage after the install I was a bit concerned is all. I dont mind a little noise, just making sure its "ok." Either way I will prob pull the helper springs, or at least move them to the bottom like you said.
