v8 ls1 vs vitesse stage 1

v8 ls1 vs vitesse stage 1
been thinking about the v8's in 944's:
390 H.P LS1/LS6 420 Ft. Lbs Torque
Type: 5.7L V-8 Small Block
Displacement: 5665 cc (346 ci)
Compression ratio: 10.1:1
Bore x stroke: 3.90" x 3.62"
Fuel system: sequential fuel injection
Rev Limit: 6000 rpm
Block: cast aluminum
Cylinder head: cast aluminum
Intake manifold: composite
Connecting rods: forged powder metal
this is ~ 280RWHP, 302RW FTLB TQ
cost $7500 plus parts to convert 944 to v8 from turnkey engine supply
pros - low end torque, easy to find parts
cons - loose power steering, ac, power brakes, pain in the *** to convert to v8, and is it really cost effective to do this, is it street legal and smogable in california?
---
Vitesse Stage 1
Stage-I has been designed for the 951 owner that requires additional performance and quick spool up. Stage-I brings your 951 to life!.
this ~ 335RWHP/335RWTQ
cost $2995
pros - seems easy, buy a 951 plus this kit and you have 330RWHP/TQ
cons - is it street legal and smogable in california? is it missing low end torque?
---
My goal here is to find the best bang for buck ($/hp/tq ratio) for high end street horsepower/tq and drivability in the 944.
It looks like the Vitesse type bolt ons are the way to go unless you want in the area 500-600RWHP? Then you are looking to pay around $16k to start.

It really depends on how you drive your car. Race track or stop light to stop light, do you like the feel of a turbo engine, or the feel of the V8. There are some nice V8 944 cars running around. The best I have seen is for a fellow RennLister in FL, IIRC his handle is JPR. There was a thread regarding his conversion. As far as cost, you will have to determine the cost to install a V8. You also must factor in the install of a kit, unless you do your own work.
All kits are for off road use only, however there are customers that pass emissions (for test purposes only!!!).
Stage 1 will make over 350rwhp, however over the next couple of weeks. There is a good chance both Stage 1 & Stage 2 will be discontinued. With the kit you need larger injectors.
A nice V8 conversion works good, same for a well designed kit such as the Vitesse kits. Any modification to your car should be for off-road use only. However, you have a better chance passing with a kit than a V8. You can set the MAF in stealth mode, I doubt you can hide a V8.
Good luck.

I think you are better to do your own build/machine etc.. instead of buying a "kit" but thats just me. Also, as far as I know vitesse hasn't hit 600whp yet.

the kit for the LS1 or LT1, after you buy the engine with ALL accessories that you'll need and want, if you do the work, it will cost you at least $11500 - $12000 to do it right. There was a detailed build of one on another forums by a guy who owned a shop.

yes the guy I called at turnkey said 28% I believe... is that accurate? I could have remembered wrong and it could be 18%...
still the cost is very high for a v8 that gets the same or less HP/TQ as a stock 951 with a vitesse kit
or is there more that needs to be done to the 951 to get the numbers that vitesse advertises besides installing their kit?

John, in looking on Vitesseracing.com at the stage I and II kits, and the dyno charts, I only see what boost the dynos were run at. Is the engine configuration detailed somewhere else?
Of relevance to this thread, what was the configuration of that stage I dyno? Also, the stage II dyno (VRSTAGE2's car) making 341 rwhp.. Do you know if it had anything besides injectors/wastegate and your kit?
