please post details here so everyone can see them, but I'm not just looking at performance, I'm looking at $/hp ratio and ease of installation & creation and smogability in so cal.

crate engine is cool, but you can build so much more for your money. Not as easy as crate engine just order and go, but well worth consideration.
400HP (wheel) is very easiy attained while keeping most street manners in a small block chevy. No exotic, one off parts, just readily available aftermarket stuff.
Since you are in CA I would carefully consider impacts. With my cam choice I suspect my have emmision issue at idle. If serous consideration for v8 route - go talk to local machinist that does higher end or race motors. You will likely find a wealth of information availaible right there.

A stock LS1 with LT headers makes 320-330 rwhp, and 340-350 board-flat rwtq, through a 951 trans.

Intresting topic.....considering I have a Vitesse Stage 2 and I'm just about to do an LS6(with custom headersand a tune) conversion! Hoping for 360rwhp and realibility!
I have nothing but good things to say about John and Vitesse but I want more reliable and usable HP/TQ. I'm tired of dealing with oil leaks! I'll have a lightly used Vitesse stage 2 kit for sale, complete with Turbo, maf, piggyback, injectors and Innovative wideband kit with less than 2000 miles on it.
So back on topic........if money is an issue go with Vitesse. If you want something unique and want the low end grunt of a V* do a conversion. Once you've driven a 944 LS1 or LS6 it's hard to get back into a Turbo.

My LS6 conversion is going to be closer to $17000, but that is for a brand new engine, all accesorries, computer, harness, headers etc.
If you do the conversion yourself and you bought a used ls1 you could do it for about $10000.
