Default Gauges, what to get and where to put them?

Looking at doing some gauges but unsure of best placement. My feelings are either put them on top of the dash so they are in eyeline while on the track or putting an emergency buzzer/light in a really visible position that is linked to oil pressure as I think this is the most important thing to have an almost immediate response to. The smaller ones that sit down on the radio area consul (whatever that's called) are less likely to be seen when you need them most, on the track. What gauges do you all think are the most necessary bearing in mind that there is a limit to space and this is a road car with standard dash? For example is a/f totally needed as a permanent fixture? Can't you get this done with a portable device that you use when you want to tune? We have stock gauges, can we rely on any of these? There are the split gauges with e.g. oil temp on the top and pressure underneath. Are these the best use of space? I need to act on this pretty soon too so any advice is welcome.
Oh, and where to get them or pricing etc if you know?

Cap off your AC center vent and put a piece of aluminum there with gauges, can fit 3 i'm pretty sure. Also the AC will still be routed to your left and right side vents so you cool the cargo area less and push more air to you. Good setup

Gabriel, Is there some kit for this or is it just a matter of fabbing one up?
What gauges are you putting in?
Is there anyone running some sort of ignition cutout or similar if the oil pressure sensor detects a sudden loss of pressure? I suppose ignition cutout would affect brakes though? Just trying to think of a failsafe for our expensive engines...

I'm using the full dash replacement that will allow me to install gauges in a row where the center AC vent is now, I'm also using the DASH 2 unit from some guys in the UK which will go in the center behind the steering wheel. http://www.race-technology.com/conte...at=10&cat=1480

As far as your application goes its a matter of fabbing up a piece of aluminum and painting it, nothing fancy

is this for a track car, street/track? Will you ever want to use the center vents again?

Remove the center vents(partial or whole), make a nice template out of cardboard and get it right. Go to a stereo store and get some black plastic sheet items, cut it drill it - check mount and then cut the holes and mount your gauges.

I've seen the gauge pod installed from LR, and it's a pretty good setup. I was skeptical at first, as I thought it would block your vision line, but they actually tuck nicely. I am planning on getting one for myself when I can actually afford a wideband. The package is a pretty good deal at $180 w/ autometer gauges, with additional cost depending on the gauges you want (wideband, digital, etc.)MY $0.02...Good luck.

Thanks guys and Ski, this is still a road and track car so I'll check out the centre vent area as an option. Going to have to put them somewhere. Do you have a warning light for any urgent readings like massive oil pressure drop? Come to think of it I don't think you'd need it unless you're running dry sump I guess, which I will be, but I'm a bit paranoid of equipment failure leaving no pressure and no oil in the bottom end?

Do you still have the stock gauges? Doesn't the oil pressure gauge show that stuff?

With a dry sump, it would probably be very easy on one of the lines after the pump to put a tee fitting, have that go to a simple pressure switch, N.O., and N.C. if the pump lost pressure, thus giving power to a red light beside, above, or below the oil pressure gauge.

Thats one way to do it, you can also use a port on the remote filter housing.

I put mine in the center vent. I bought another dash surround for 10 bucks and took out the center. I made a panel from the plastic top of an old vcr that had a textured finish. You can't see it in the pic very well but I made the gauges angle in by cutting pieces of 2 inch metal conduit on the chop saw at 30 degrees IIRC.

I mounted my boost gauge to the lower screw of the A Pillar side trip, so it sat tucked right above that drivers side HVAC vent. Perfect spot.

My car has the LR pillar. Looks very clean and does not obstruct your vision. Gauges are eye level which is nice. I've attached to images, the only ones I could find. Gives you an idea on their size
