Default Foamy oil

When engine oil foams from over-filling, what does it look like"

Smell like?

Beyond draining it and replacing the oil filter, what should be done to flush out foamy oil?

Do you have white oil froth?
Overfilling will not change the color - just will get it whipped up by the crank into the AOS.

Its just like foamy milk, if you leave it the foram disappears.
There are some good windage trays around to prevent it http://www.crank-scrapers.com/944_windage_tray_c.jpg

Dash do you drive your car a lot? If not, moisture will form in the engine and will cause this. Mine does that as well, until it gets extremely hot. Meaning driving for a good 2-3hrs.

Any of you guys with a little mayo in the oil cap.
You are starting to pull water through #4 at vac.
Slowly at first, but it is not good for your rings.

Special so are you saying that there is a headgasket problem? My car sits for weeks on end, I was always under the impression that it was caused by this. I have started my car ice cold and immediately pulled the plugs and absolutely no evidence of coolant.

-clear water drops in the cap after a 5 minute drive=okay
-any white whatsoever means mixing water&oil at #4 oil ring=not okay
-after a long drive/hot engine the cap should be BONE dry and hot.

Also - I realize that many geniuses on this board have a little white on the cap and will tell me they are "fine" for 5000 miles.
When you remove the head, you will see the light.

Hey Mr Tool,
On my 2.5 i didn't get the Mayo but did get condensation droplets. Although at the time i was only using the car for short journeys. Are you based in a colder or warmer region?

The foamy oil is not, fortunately, in my Porsche.

In my BMW 535i with new head gasket, was getting low oil pressure light flickering at idle rpm. Pulled the dipstick and took the cover off the oil filter canister, and had beige colored froth that looks like whipped cream on a latte mocha. Similar on the bottom of the oil filler cap. In the past I've never seen this, but rather just plain old oil, maybe dirty or clean, depending on age of the oil.

The 20W50 in there only had a few hundred miles on it, with a new filter. In the course of replacing the head gasket recently, I used 1 quart of ATF in with 4 quarts of new 10W40 oil to clean the engine, and only ran it a short while under light load, then drained, put in new 20W50 and new filter. No oil issues thereafter, until now. I did add some more oil to top off the dipstick reading, and may have over-filled it, causing the frothing. Or, maybe that is not the cause.

What's the best way to flush the engine of this stuff and start afresh?

Or, just ignore it?
