You've just opened the pandora's box of all 951 questions.
If you upgrade your turbo you'll need to at least have chips to match it. The sky is the limit when it comes to spending money, so it really comes down to what you're looking for out of your car versus how much you're willing to spend.
Good luck, welcome to the deep end

biggest is not best for the street. Bigger (in general) equals more lag... more top end but at the cost of lag.

A turbo change will require at a minimum a chip change to do it right.

Also realize that if you are stock, your turbocharger is capable of much much more.
chips/perf exhaust/fuel press regulator/ wastegate/ boost controller are some goodies that in conjunction can make a night and day difference in your stock turbo.

If you have to replace this may be the oprotune time to upgrade but do lots of research first. Slapping on a big turbo with mismatched perf parts will certainly not perform as you hope.

It all depends on what your ultimate goals are.

If you want to keep the engine mods essentially stock/mild power increase, go with a k26/8 (cheap and many for sale). Along with upgrading the stock boost control, which will change the turbo (boost vs throttle position) "feel", you will already experience quite a difference.

If you want substantial more power, you need to get a bigger turbo compressor with same "8" hotside, or equivalent (many options there). Then you also need to upgrade software, then the list goes on from there, etc, etc.
What are your power goals is really the question.
I can't think of any downsides, except a lighter wallet and having more power and eventually wrapping yourself around a tree!

Do you have any mods now? I would get a maf/turbo kit from vitesse or LR.

If you cant/ dont want to spend "too much" then you can get a 27/6(8) or 26/8 (all stock) turbo's, with new fuel pressure regulators (3.0 or lindsey adjustable) and have russel (951max.com) make you a set of chips for it. All that would be about $700-$1000 depending on the turbo you find/want to use. Good for about 270+hp and 280+tq (dependant on boost). Oh you will need a boost controler too... about $70-$400 depending. Black *** i think woul be fine unless you wanted better control then go with a EBC. MAy then want to think about a wastegate or shims/washers.

See how the list goes on?...I think you could do a reasonable set up for about $800 with everything except a new wastegate stated above.

The guys may correct me on this though....

Yeah if he has chips with supporting mods for the stock turbo he could save some $ for the switch. If not, you will need the mbc and 3bar fpr and possibly injectors if you go larger than the 26/8. Personally I would do a kit that has everything or most of what I'd need ala VR or LR.

Man be prepared for a headache. The first item on your list should be some Tylenol. This should be followed by some Prozac to fight the feelings of depression and anxiety. In the end, dont forget that you will probably never discover the best set up, God only knows.

If you wanted to go a little bigger I'd find a 944 S turbo - K27/8 IIRC.
