Default 5 speed or 6 speed search is not my friend...

Ok, I'm getting conflicting reports. I tried doing a search and the thread didn't come up. Is the six speed stronger than the five speed? How do you know? Who really knows? Why doesn't the six speed come with an oil cooler? Don't know what to do. Pros and cons of both. Help me out...cars been out of the loop for over two months now.

well the differential is going to be stronger, it is a lot bigger being a g50 unit. but the gears themselves will be about the same strengh as the 5 speed. the shifting is a little nicer on the 6 speed as the selector shafts are on roller bearings. its a shame about the oil cooler though. i would guess the 968 turbo varients came with an oil cooler but i cant be sure.

one benifit would be your car will be a little more special then it is now. not many 944 turbos with a 6 speed out there.

anything can be done. there is no facility on the diff side casing for oil line connection, nor the space on the inside of the casing for an oil pump. the case could be drilled and an adapter welded on to have an external pump and oil cooler. and the return line would want to be above the oil level in the gearbox.

Anyway you should be asleep getting your strength up to do all the upcoming work. Bet you haven't even looked at the exhaust yet??? lol

Oh sure, come up with a completely logical excuse why don't you?? Just because you know what you're talking about doesn't mean you need to make me look stupid. Hey I don't need your help for that. hahahahaha
Good nite.

No, the 968 turbo did not have an external oil cooler. The housing it self has fins which provides cooling. This is 1st hand information because I have one.

Chris Cervelli's 500 hp 951 track car did not run with a diff cooler.

I talked with him about his race car tranny choice one day at his shop. Said that it would have been nice to have a cooler, but he chose the 968 unit since it was stronger and had more gear choices.

Point is I don't believe the lack of a diff cooler will hurt the overall performance/strength of the 968 unit. If chris wanted a Turbo S 5spd he could have easily put one it. On the other had a one of the Vision 500hp race cars used a Turbo S spd. So I guess it is in some respects 1/2 dozen of one 6 of another.

Fitting a 6-speed to a 951 is pretty much a piece of cake, but I'm still scratching my head about the speedometer pick-up.
I worked out both the 951 and 968 wiring diagrams using relay G16 but I only managed so far to cook an ABS control unit.
Who can provide the right wiring for the conversion ?
Do the four wheels actually have to rotate altogether to make the speedo work or only the front left wheel ?

Many TIA.

I think you were the one the that pointed me in the right direction using G16, thanks. Worked fine with mine, but the ABS units changed during, you need the correct bosch unit, I got one from a 968, direct replacement. The feed to the frequency converter comes from the abs unit.

The 968 is a way superior box, much better shift as well.
