This war is real, these terrorists are real and now Jack Savant is gone.
I worked closely with Jack when he was with my company at Salerno, a brave man killed by a coward with explosives. We heard the explosion as it isn't far from my office. He wasn't the only casulty, but I and my friends will sorely miss him. Damn Jack, I'm going to miss you man.
Tomorrow I get to watch them put his casket on the bird to Germany, we have lost a hero and this world is a worse place for it.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Jack was one of those "rough" men, who gave the ultimate. He took the place of an American soldier, never let it be said only those who wear a uniform defend us.
Rough men
There's a character trait that's decided by fate
Comes (sadly) to many, far too faint, far too late.
They won't face the aggressor, stand up to his ire
They have not the will to fight his fire with fire.
So they bend over backwards to see all sides as fair,
Till they're faced with dragon breath fire in their hair.
Like our brethren in France, who'd know better than we,
Yet seem never to learn, seem doomed never to see.
Yes, it seems there are some who're determined by fate,
To possess not the courage to step up to the plate,
Who shrink from all threat because nothing's worth war.
But how can they know lest they've been there before?
Thank God some have courage, the will, yes, the grace,
To stand for the shirkers, stand strong in their place.
Thank God we have stalwarts who'll stand for us all,
Who will rise to the challenge at their nation's call.
The faint-hearted, who fear, whose reaction is flight,
Have no comprehension of those who will fight.
To hide their own trepidation they attempt to demean
The rough men, who defend them, as barbaric, obscene.
Yet these rough men stand ready, hard weapons to hand,
To put placaters behind them, draw a line in the sand,
To preserve for the peaceniks what they won't defend,
So their own unearned freedom won't perish, won't end.
To appeasers, rough men are coarse government tools.
To rough men, appeasers are dumb delusional fools.

Thanks...my prayers are with his family, he will be loaded onto the C130 or C17 with the greatest honors an American can have, with the flag drapped over him. He's not the first friend I have lost, but it hurts more than the others did.

I wish I could, God speed and safe keeping to your friend. Tell him thanks for his selfless service whatever his motivation. I have to go to Bagdad in February, that place is hell.

sorry for the loss of a friend but dod contractors are there by choice, were probably specials force ops and very well compensated for a very hi risk/small reward, work arena.
i lost friends in vietnam but we didn't have a choice of whether or not to be there.

I won't pretend I know how you feel, because I don't. I can only speak for myself. I support the mission you are charged with, and I fight the battle here every day to make sure that cowardice and defeatism are not the only things heard.
My condolences, and support.

Bearone,
Yes I know we have a choice, I'm here of my own free will. That doesn't make it any better. Sorry for your loses, but save the bull **** for after we put his body on a plane.
He was retired Green Beret, and now he was over here in support of the US soldiers.
We know the risk, but that's like saying its okay family members die in auto accidents becaue they knew the risk when they got behind the wheel.
Any future sentiments like this please keep to yourself.

I'm very sorry for your loss Guns
I don't know what it's like to lose a close friend, but I lost a friend from boot camp over here in 2004. He was a HMMWV driver with Marine Infantry. I also see what our brothers and sisters face as they walk thru the streets of the dangerous cities...my heart and prayers go out to one in particular who passed away yesterday...God bless all our troops over here, and thank you Guns, for being over here and helping even tho you don't have to. I'll have to meet you sometime back in the states and buy you a drink. Where do you live back in the states BTW?
