I have read a few incidents where the oil pickup tube broke and caused an oil starvation failure.
Does anyone have a set of pics on where the failure is on the tube and what did they do to reinforce them??

Tyro,
Just bring yours over to the house and I'll get it reinforced at the same time.

When I pulled my motor apart for its rebuild, I had noticed a small crack in the pickup tube. The cause for the failure was that the supporting tab that secures the pickup tube a few inches up had broken. I'd be curious to hear if anyone has seen a broken one with this tab in place.

I believe the typical failure mode is: the tab supporting the pickup and return pipe cracks or breaks off from one of the tubes, then vibration causes the pickup to crack at the mounting base - where it can then suck in air. The tab is pretty flimsy.
We heard that cars running without B/S belts, or running with the belt improperly installed (shafts out of phase), are prone to cracking the pickup tube.
I do not know if it is a common occurance on cars that have always correctly run the B/S.
I have had the pickups on my two track cars reinforced as a precaution (although I have not had the tab or the tube crack).

I would also like to see some pics of the modified shroud or baffles some have made at the base of the pick-up. I'll have two motors apart to work on over the Winter and would like to bullet proof them as best as possible.
