Turbo rebuilds: who does 'em???
#16
So...back to the top for any other suggestions on who to send the turbo to for a rebuild.
So far I have LR and Diesel Injection, any other top quality turbo rebuilders out there? Anyone to avoid?
I'd like to get this shipped out within the next day or two.

Like he said, just go with the k-26/8, the S models carried those from the factory. From my limited knowledge the biggest advantage is better high rpm power from the bigger hot side (correct me if im wrong someone), and any longer spoolup time (IF there is a noticeable amount) is pretty easily counteracted with good chips and an mbc with some WG shims.

As long as you upgrade the software with the turbo you should bo OK,
But you should do the WG if you are going to a new turbo, while you are there throw in a MBC and do the injectors to go along with your software. Basically a $2000 solution.

While I appreciate the feedback, I think my best alternative right now is a $350 turbo rebuild. So if anyone has any other suggestions on where to send the turbo for a rebuild, let 'em rip. I have emailed Diesel Injection to get information, and haven't yet heard back.
I find it hard to believe that there aren't more opinions on, or experiences with, turbo rebuilders. Good or bad, feel free to PM me if you don't want to air information in public. Thanks!!!

If I were to upgrade to a 26/8, would I also need to change my chips and wastegate? From the other responses above, it seems like I would have to upgrade everything as a system.
Diesel Injection wants $450-500 for a basic rebuild.

I've had two dealings with LR now, and can't say I've been terribly impressed with either. The first, I bought a fuel injection harness from them but then decided to replace the entire harness in the car instead. I returned their harness, in the original package also in the original box they sent it in and they refunded something like 75%. Ok, I'll eat that $40 as my mistake...not like it's a lot of money but they could have at least explained it when I asked.
The second order I bought their stainless fuel line kit...which comes with a hose clamp to hold the line on the fuel pressure regulator. Not a fuel injection clamp mind you, but a hose clamp to squeeze a stainless mesh over a rubber line. Its simply not possible to make that work. Even if you strip back the stainless yourself, a standard 15 cent hose clamp on a pressurized fuel line? Garbage. I bought injection clamps, used my stock fittings and new hose with firebraid over it and made my own for far cheaper than their dangerous set up. They also charge $400 for a set of fuel injectors that are $250 at fiveomotorsport.com which makes me think they have their margins set pretty high. I've just not been impressed with Lindsey I guess...maybe I've been unlucky. With the turbo in any event, I would have it rebuilt by the diesel shop..at least then you are dealing with the company that is doing the rebuild, not a reseller....just my opinion.

I had two PMs regarding who I eventually used for the turbo rebuild. I figured I'd post it here for future reference in case anyone else is seeking options. I used D&W Diesel, they have a local shop as well as several others including ones in Cleveland and MA:

I was able to drop it off at their local shop, and had it back in exactly one week. They seem to have done a nice job. $407 included new seals, bearings, balancing, and cleaning.

Speaking of rebuilt turbos...Is there a break-in period on these? I have never heard of such a thing, so I suppose it's a non-issue, but I just thought I would check with the Renn-boostaholics.

Make sure you prime the turbo by pulling teh DME relay and crank it until you get full oil pressure. Make sure your oil and filter are new. Start it up, and stay OUT of the boost for at least 100 miles, and then you can start turning the boost up. On my new turbo, I went 300 miles before I started boosting.
For a track car, I'm not sure how you'd break it in, you can let it idle for a little while, but you certainly don't want to idle for "100 miles". lol
