Default Torque Tube Swap

OK. I've got to swap the torque tube in one of my cars. The engine will be out at some point so the question is with the engine out how much of the rear end must I disassemble and are there shortcuts that will keep me from removing the tranny and rear suspension?

The answer is no. First of all, the tranny is mounted to the torque tube, so it obviously has to come out. The rear torsion bar housing assembly, ie, the rear suspension also has to be dropped to get the TT in and out. Plan on some fun for your swap unfortunately.

Yep, that is the killer.

So now you can order some new bushings too . An extra set of hands and an extra floor jack work well here, also perfect time to change, re-index, or remove t-bars.

Oh and make sure you pull the brace right in front of the torsion bar housing under the parking break cables... I was cursing at my car trying to figure out why the assembly wouldnt drop and it was binding on that. Finally got it out so I could rebuild my toque tube.

Just what I need, even more work. I'm sure those 20 year old bushings are just fine.

So from your picture it looks like I can just disconnect the brake lines, unbolt the shocks, and drop the torsion carrier/swing arms as a unit. Correct?

Not bad... Trans has to come out and the lowering the suspension is very easy (only a couple bolts)

if its a later TT it will have the ears which means spinning it 180* so it can come out....

The hardest part is just all the freakin man handling

When I swapped mine I did not take the suspension all the way out either. Undid the brake lines and lowered it far enough to get the tube to clear. I just wish I would have taken the extra time to change the rear main seal, leaks so bad after three years I just bought another 951 for backup!

So what is the best way to get the parking break cables out of the way?

You dont have to worry about the parking brake cable its the brake lines that limit the amout you can drop it.
