How many cans does it take to completely fill the AC system (assuming its completely empty)?

I can look up the R12 capacity when I get home tonight. Are you charging R12 or R134a? Keep in mind that if the system was opened to air you need to evacuate to a deep vacuum before charging.

There is (or was) a sticker in the engine bay, but I don't have access right now. For R12, I used 2 14oz cans plus a small can of oil (with R12) to fill my car when I first got it -- it was low enough so that the AC wouldn't kick in.

Rogue,
I put in 3 12 oz cans and ended up with just a slight overcharge (high end of specs) starting from completely empty and pulling a vacuum first. I honestly don't know what the factory specified amount is though.
Also, do NOT put in oil unless you have had the compressor out/replaced and are positive there's none in it. They need a very specific amount, and just adding some because it seems like a good idea, really isn't. It seems to vary a bit between the different versions/brands, but everything I've read says 50cc (ml) for a replacement compressor, or up to 80cc if the system is completely purged.

Ok, thanks for the tip. My system was charged about 2 years ago and worked fine. But I believe I have a slight leak, because this summer it doesn't work. But I just want to make sure to get enough Freon.
