Default Anyone happen to have an '89 Turbo Transmission?

This is for the 944....I lost my third gear and am debating between rebuilding and replacing. Replacing is the short term fix that will get me to another race this year but either way, I will rebuild my current box. Never hurts to have a spare.

Thanks in advance.

Why not put an lsd in during the rebuild?

1st and 2nd gears are thicker on the S's and '89's so you can't retrofit the box. In addtion to the LSD, they also have the external oil coolers

all of my trannies have external oil cooler, I am running a 86 with limited slip and my car has 341rwhp and 349rwtq and the tranny holds just fine.

Lart....I will keep you in mind as I may need an LSD unit in the near future. Question for ya.....can you retro fit an oil-cooler unit if your current unit does not have the oil-cooler? What would it take?

Only a couple differences between an AOR (Turbo S) trans and an earlier Turbo trans w/ LSD and cooler. And any of the transmissions are interchangeable, as are the internals.

The TS input shaft has the additional hardening performed on the 1st and 2nd gear teeth, but are dimensionally identical to the earlier Turbo input shafts. Since even high hp/modified early Turbos do not have a tendancy of busting up 1st or 2nd gear, Im not positive that the harder teeth on the input shaft are really that critical.

The Turbo S LSD units have thicker inner friction discs and so the pressure rings are different - they both have to be replaced together when/if rebuilding an earlier LSD unit. Again, may be nice, but not critical - even for a track car.

So if you find a nice 86-88 Trans with LSD and cooler options, I would definitely consider buying/using it in place of an original AOR trans (since the differences are probably not worth the extra $ premium for a "Turbo S" trans).

The 951S 1st & 2nd gears are hardened, not thickened. They are interchangeable non-hardened gears. Who told you they are not interchangeable?

ALL model year 951 trannys had the LSD and/or Oil cooler loop as an option. (not just the TurboS's)

I would rather own a low mileage & undamaged 86 951 gearbox w/ LSD with or without oil cooler, than a highmileage 951S gearbox with LSD and oil cooler. (which is what I have on my car now.)
