Default Is this car a Turbo S ?

I own a 1988 Turbo S ( or so I thought). The model number on the window sticker is 951-352. I heard the Turbo S was 951-952. The sticker indicates that is has the Turbo S option package. The car has the M44/52 engine and all the other Turbo S goodies : S4 brakes, LSD, Forged wheels etc. Attached are some images that may help.

Is this a Turbo S or some sort of special options package ?

952 is a right hand drive 944 Turbo. Based on the sticker I'd say that it is a Turbo S. The 247hp motor was only available in the "S" of '88.

When you bought the car did the PO know what they had? My PO didn't really have much of an idea. She just knew that it was a Porsche Turbo and that you took it to the shop when it broke. I got a very good deal on a car that had never been driven very hard.

The owner new what he had when I boiught it . I am trying to sell the car and I was challenged by a potential buyer. He said the car was not an S because the model # on the window sticker did not say 951-952. He said he talked to Porsche and they confirmed that it was not a Turbo S. I always thought that if it had the m44/52 motor it was an S.

You've got a window sticker that says it is a Turbo S and you are listening to a potential buyer saying it is wrong? What a goof. The only reason I could see some confusion was if the guy thought it had to be silver rose to be a real Turbo S, which is pure bunk. I might entertain discussion why an 89 is not a Turbo S, but certainly not an 88 with the proof you have.

I don't think I'd sell to him on principle. Suggest to him that he should go look for a 'real' turbo S.

I used to have an 88 Turbo S that was White with Black interior with every possible option except heated seats. When I bought it the glove box contained a copy of a Road and Track special edition that reviewed the new 88 Turbo S. The car they reviewed and pictured was white with a black interior.

On the 89 comment. As with most Porsche models sometimes an S model is introduced mid-year. The following year the S designation is dropped despite the newer model having all the options of the previous mid-year S model.

The "Sport Chassis" refers to sportier ie., stiffer springs, torsion bars, sway bars, and adjustable koni shocks.

Stand your ground. Tell the potential buyer to take a hike!

I have a black '88 Turbo S. Give Porsche around $25 and they will verify the fact that it is an "S" model as well as how it was optioned. It comes in a very impressive folder. I believe that is done through the PCA. See: http://www.pca.org/members/ With the owners manual there should also be a supplement for the Turbo S model done in the same style as the regular Turbo manual. I agree the 952 was the right hand drive model.

This site may also be useful as a sales tool: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/4786/

Sounds like an S to me, but I no longer have the window sticker to compare to yours. Sounds like an uninformed buyer or he trying to shake you down in price. Ignore him.

Actually, the chassis is also just a little bit different. There are a few places where extra supports are welded to the frame rails to help rigidity. To the best of my knowledge only the Turbo S and 89 Turbo have these, although 1990+ turbos, S2s and 968s might have them as well.

While we're on the subject of the chassis, I have heard from a number of sources, but never read in print that the tubs for Turbo S car...in addition to having the reinforcing plates in the front were also hand welded at the seams. True? This and the ubiquitous "reinforced torque tube", I think, are the greatest unexplained mysteries of Turbo S specification.
