Default Bad news- Burnt Headgasket or fried piston?

Well I had to cut my spring break early because the car took a ****.

About 500 miles into the trip, the car started to sound funny. I pulled over into gas station to investigate, and I didnt see anything wrong, but the engine sounded like trouble. I thought it was a vaccuum leak so after about 30 minutes of looking over the engine with a flashlight, Rock set off again.

The car kept running and it seemed fine, but just sounded funky. The more I drove, the ****tier the car ran however. So I pulled over and found that the vacuum line from the ISV to the intake manifold popped of! I thought that was the problem, but nope! I must have driven about 200 miles with that line off.

To make a long story short, I ran a compression test and cylinders 4. 2 and 1 had 150PSI.

Cylinder 3 on the other hand had 0 PSI! YAY! 0PSI!!! Who wants to throw a party for my PSI!!! 3000 Miles on a rebuilt MOTOR AND NOW ITS SCREWED! Woooo.

So I had to drive it the whole way back with the car snapping under boost and launching white smoke rockets out the end.

If anybody knows how to figure out how to find out what the problem is, please let me know. There is no oil in the coolant or vise versa.

Any help is great, in the mean time im going to beat myself on the ***** with a mallet

Any other symptoms? Blue smoke? Oil in exhaust?

Possible valve seating issue?

It ticks like crap, which is what my black car did when it burnt a valve. I dont think there are any other symptoms.

Could have burned a valve as well.
What work was done to the head during the rebuild? If the valve did not completely seal it would slowly burn away, causing a similar set of symptoms to what you described.

Did you use new spring retainers on the rebuild? Maybe you have a broken retainer or a stray part and a valve is stuck open. I doubt that you would burn only one valve if you leaned out like that, I would expect all cylinders to suffer some but adjacent compression is good. Just a thought.

Or perhaps the t-belt wasn't adjusted after 1500 or fewer miles. I would assume you put on a new t-belt/rollers etc when you did the rebuild right?
How hard did you run the engine...ie during the break in period. Is it possible that you had a ring failure?

Do a leakdown test , it'll give more accurate information.

Zero compression? Sure the tester was hooked up right? Did the spark plug look different than the others? Might want to pump compressed air in to see where it comes out! At any rate, sounds like you need to pull the head and take a look.

Steve: How common do the spring retainers need replacement or fail? i never heard of such incidents happening, but just wondering.

I never heard of a retainer failing on 944 before. I've dropped a valve on a Jeep before and the loose parts bounced all over inside the valve cover. If something is to hold the valve even partially open the lifter will clatter like crazy. A broken valve spring will do the same, Brad-Cam had this happen to his car...very noisy but he made it home. It could be anything in the valve train but the disconnected ICV hose is a strange coincidence if a burnt valve is suspected.

Yeah the tester was hooked up right, I checked like 4 times to make sure myself. I couldnt believe it.

The head was like brand new already, but we went ahead and did all of the valve seals and guides.

It has new a new timing belt and rollers, and during the break in period I kept it under 3000RPMS for 500 miles

Oh yeah, and the ticking sound its making sounds exactly like what my first black car sounded like when it had a burnt valve. Only my first car had 50psi on the cylinder with the burnt valve.

Oh yeah, it also started doing something strange with the oil pressure. The Oil pressure would bounce around like crazy. It would jump from 2-5 on the gauge, but would usually only do it under very light throttle. Any thoughts?

I just hope its something small. It sucks going through all of the crap to build an engine, and then probally having to redo it all over again 3000 miles later.

The car now left a puddle of oil on my sisters driveway. So much for not having a leaky car. Anyone have any other thoughts here? I dont know what im going to do.
