The VP website says both streetbaz 103 and motorsport 103 are street legal in "many" states (but says neither is legal where MTBE is prohibited) -- which begs the question as to the difference.

VP used to sell a street legal 104 unleaded, straight from the pump. Guess that's gone...

So, the xylene at HD is in gallon containers labelled xylene??? Or does it go by something else?

Dfastest - I only have one motorcycle shop here in town that has race gas, and it goes for ~$12/gal for some 100 octane stuff (guy on the phone 'thought' it was 100 octane, wasn't sure if it was unleaded or not).

Mike1982 - my purpose is twofold: I remember reading that by using xylene or toluene I will burn a lot cleaner, almost guaranteeing passing a smog test (which I have coming up); and I'd like to be able to turn up the boost on occasion - I live in CA and can only get 91 octane and have been afraid to turn up the boost past 15 psi.

Thanks!

Second the motorcycle shop idea. They usually sell drums of race gas for reasonably cheap. . .

Home Depot sells gallon cans of xylene and mineral spirits (toluene) for about 8-12 a can (pretty spendy though).

Dfastest - I have Powerhaus' K27/6 quickspool, and I believe they did some head work too (according to receipts). A previous owner had another shop install the K27/6 kit and had the head shipped out to them, but then he took it to Powerhaus a few months later for some other work (tuning I believe). The owner after that got the bright idea of putting in Guru chips, so I'm not sure of the tune now (and I didn't get the chips from the Powerhaus tune). I will check with the boat shops too (not sure we have one anymore).

Porsche-o-phile - so if I have a couple gallon cans of mineral spirits in my garage, that IS toluene? (I'm going to check the can right now). Is xylene labelled xylene, or does it go by something else?

Thanks David - I guess that clears that up

So can anyone tell me if this is toluene? The chemical composition isn't labelled anywhere on the container.

The ones available at Sherman Williams clearly say Toluene on them , I do not think your picture is the real deal.
You can also order a palette of 5 gallon containers or a 55 gal drum from VP or Sunoco for around $275-350. For the drum you would need a pump and some people are uncomfortable to keep that amount of gas in a garage . The 5 gal sealed containers work great if that is a concern to you.

No, as Pole Position says it will be labeled Toluene just as the Xylene

Toluene= 114 oct
Xylene=117 oct

Dude - don't put that anywhere near your 951.
I mix xylene 25%.

Also - if that is a 2 stroke - they love it too. I use 40% and Amsoil synthetic 2 cycle in mine - but then I have 205 static compression.......

how much toluene do u dump in your tank? Im assuming not the whole thing. What octane would that give you from 93?

It all depends on your mix. Here is a quick number crunch for you!
To= (O*Am) + (Xo*Am) / TAm

To = Total octane
O = Octane of fuel (gas)
Xo = Octane of Tuluene (or whatever you use)
Am = Amount of fuel
TAm = Total amount of fuel in tank in gallons
EX. To = (93 * 10 gallons) + (114 * 2 gallons) / 12 gallons in tank = 96.5 total octane

Thanks for chiming in, ST. NOTHING is going in my tank unless I am absolutely sure everything will be OK. Will 25% Xylene burn cleaner than just unleaded? As in if someone wanted to be sure they would pass smog? I should pass just fine without, but there's nothing like a little insurance. I did find exactly what David has pictured at my local HD. $15/gal (ouch!!!). Oh, the bike is an older XL600R - a heavy pig compared to the bikes out now (and what all my friends have). No advantage to using race fuels ..

And thanks for the other info too, guys!

I just purchased 20 Gal of xylene from the local Sherwin Williams store. Normal price, $12.86/Gal. With employee discount, (50%!!) $6.43 a gallon. My cousin works there. Primarily I'll use this in my old Dodge with the 10.5/1 compression and a slight pinging issue. BUT, I'm seriously considering tweaking the 951's blend with it. The boost on the 951 is around 19lbs. If I add one or two gallons to a tank of 94 octane, what do you think the result will be? I'm confused about the fuel line decay concerns. I read in another thread that normal pump gas contained Xylene as a octane booster. Has anyone ever had fuel line issues after using this stuff? I thought fuel line was very resistant to toxins.
