FWIW, in August of '04 a bunch of 944 and 928 waterpumper guys met up for a daylong ratrace in southern British Columbia. These included Brian, Rich Sandor, me and my son, and about 25 others. Pics were posted on Rennlist, and maybe are still available via search using "Hell's Gate" keywords.

Anyway, this was not a road race, but rather a congenial high speed grand tour. The 928 crowd seemed pretty passive, and in the give an take of the day the 928s did not seem as adept or quick at mountain driving. I would not say they were sluggish, but spent the day at the back of the pack led by 944 Turbos. A head to head comparison would be interesting, but at altitude I'd bet on the 944 Turbo.

Nice kill. The whine was not an SC but probably something else (PS pump, Torque Tube bearings or something lese).

How much boost are you running?

Nothing new to me. 928's are in the fat side of the scale. I wouldn't doubt it that it was supercharged, my mechanic installed a sc in a 928 and it actually was slower after the installation no joke.

Yep, very typical check this out

In my experience here in the midwest, its a pretty rare day that you see anyone in a 928 on the track, much less passing anybody. By comparison, there are usually about as many 951's as there are 911's at the local DE's. I'm not saying that the 928 isn't capable of it, but you sure don't see many doing it.

928's are a unique experience, and exude more "Porscheness" than the 944/968's do, but I can honestly say (in my opinion, at least) that both cars will get you to your destination in equal style. For all the "mine's faster than yours" bantering going on between the two forums now, I will promise that the driver makes a much bigger difference than the car does, at least on the track. I've driven both models enough to say that I really think the lighter weight of the 951 makes it a lot easier to drive faster on the track than any hp advantage a 928 can have, but it boils down to how the driver uses the capabilities of the car. Its a good bit easier (again, in my opinion) to make a 951 "overacheive" than it is a 928. Ask some of the 911 track guys who have been steamrolled by a run of the mill 951, they usually aren't happy about it. Ask, at the same time, how many times they've been passed by a 928...

Most 928 owners feel isolated, even within the Porsche community. If you think its bad for 928 owners, try owning a 968 sometime... you'd amazed at how often I hear "what the heck is that" or "never heard of it before". Trust me, we are much closer related to each other than y'all think! lol

I like (and own) both, so I think I can speak with some authority on the subject. We'd be a lot better off fighting the vette's, vipers and stangs than we would be by dividing our own house.

Interesting. I didn't think there were any places left more than 10 minutes away from a Home Depot...

YEAH...OOOOK, whatever you say, pal!

If in fact that was the case, you really should look for another mechanic.

Just a little joke about all the Home Depot stores cropping up everywhere.

OMG, only 10psi of boost and you destroyed a Supercharged shamu, wait until las Niñas from the 928 crowd see this thread.

I don't want you guys to get the idea that I don't like 928's, no other P-car can offer the comfort that the 928 offers. The 928 is like the Cadillac sedan deville of porsche, very smooth and luxurious.

you cant say it was supercharged if it got beaten by a near stock 951. if it was supercharged it would go straight past it. expessially at that speen. 928s have long legs and this is where they come into their own. you also cant compare a 944 turbo to a 928. one is a sports type car(951) the other is a gt car(928). two different catigories. i have to agree with imo000 if your mechanic supercharged a 928 and it went slower i really wouldnt be going to your mechanic lart.

I am going to try a different mechanic, he is more knowledgeable with MB and BMW’s I think. Can anybody recommend a shop named Strictly German in Pasadena California? are they good?
