Default 97-99 Viper GTS vs. Modified 951?

Has anyone with a highly modified 951 gone up against a stock 96-99 Viper GTS? If so, how did they compare?

Lets see:

Viper GTS: 3420lbs, 450bhp

sounds like it would take about 400 hp out of a 3000lb 951 to get the same power to weight ratio

My prediction: Obviously the Viper will win off the line, they have tooooons of torque down low and can lauch hard.

In a highway pull, say 60 -130, I would bet a 951 with about 320rwhp could take the viper, just cause they are so good when racing from a roll

I bet you would need still WAY over 320rwhp even at a roll against one. If you got the 951 weight down to 2,500 lb range, and have 330-350 rwhp, the power to weight ratio would be the same. But then you have to worry about air flow over/under the car, drag, gearing, etc.

Lots of people with around 320 hp at the wheels have beaten C5 Z06s from a roll, so I think 320 might be enough to handle an early Viper.

There was an article in Excellence in the mid-90s about Cervelli's modified 951. He claimed to be able to beat Vipers with ~350hp.

His claim, not mine.

I beat a Viper from stop light to stop light(1/8 mile or so). I took off, while he stalled. You shoulda seen the look on his face......

Vipers when compared to other cars Vipers are harder to drive. They are not too forgiving especially at launch. If you don’t get it just right, you’ll either roast the tires or stall. They are monsters are any speed.

i may or may not have embarassed an old (~'92?) RT/10 on the freeway ~70-120 very very very late one night. I was alone, he was with his girlfriend. needless to say, he probably didnt get any that night.

and i have like, no mods. i'd hate to imagine what would happen if i'd had more mods....

My old '86 951 (with some nice mods) got eaten alive by a pair of late 90's Vipers on the straight at Heartland Park, but I would usually catch them within the first three turns and pass them on the short straight on the back side of the track. We repeated this a number of times during the DE. I can't say I was overly impressed by either drivers ability to do anything other than mash the go pedal on the straights, so I can't say what a Viper is capable of in a turn. Sure seemed like they were pushing a lot, tho.

I haven't run my '87 against one yet, but am hoping to sometime this summer. I'm thinking that it will take a lot "more" 951 to run with a Viper than it will a Vette, altho the Z-06's I have seen are pretty impressive, imo. My biggest concern in making a "Viper/Z-06 eater" out of a 951 is the amount of rubber under the rear. If you are running with them down the straight, I bet you have the same traction loss (or more) in the corners, unless you are very good at feathering the gas. I'd rather have better balance and faster times around the track than the ability to run heads up with a Viper (or anything else, for that matter) in a straight line.

Kudo's to you guys who can turn a bunch more hp on a 951 into faster track times. I can't.

Regards,

My understanding is the Vipers handle like a greased pig on a linoleum floor. As such, why fight the battle on the opponent's terms? Fight it on yours. Lure them onto the twisties and enjoy picking 'em apart.

I have written about the Viper that tailgated me. Followed me for a couple miles then tailgated me down a long onramp. At the end of the ramp he punched it and swung into the center lane.
This was k27/6 and 330 RWHP.
He never got to see my pretty vented nose panel.

320rwhp is enough to take the older ones. I raced a very old rt-10 and those things are dogs.

I bet 320-330rwhp and a good driver would be enough to run with the later GTS's ect.

Just get him in a canyon road. The Viper will get scared and drive straight off a cliff. Then youre set

No offense, bud, but where did you learn your basic division? 330whp just beats the GTS's power-to-weight when at the standard 951 weight.
