Default How do you pop the rear view mirror off it's mount?

Whole thing came off my windshield this morning and I need to reglue it. I'd rather just reglue the "button" then put on the mirror when the glue is dry...

The mirror pulls straight up and out of the mount.

Ok, that would be easy if the mount was still glued to the windshield...

Be careful regluing. I broke the windshield on a 944 once by pressing too hard while waiting for the glue to dry.

You can also break the windshield on a 944 by pushing up too hard on the hood while trying to change the hood shocks, or by following too closely in a race, but those are other storys...

Geesh, picky picky

Clamp on some vice grips and yank!

I'm guessing this may have had something to do with the rollbar installation?

I've pried out a windshield button with some channellocks and a little leverage. It's a tight fit, but it'll come out.

Yeah, I rotated the mirror out of the way and it just popped off in my hand. Geuss the bond strength on the glue packed it in...

That happened to me about a month after I bought my Turbo. I rotated the mirror aside while cleaning the windshield one day and POP, it came off in my hands. No problem, that's happened to me with multiple cars before - I'll glue it back on, right? One problem this time though - it pulled a CHUNK of glass out with the button

So... I just left the chunk of glass there and dealt with it. I bought the requisite repair kit, cleaned out the divot in the windshield, cleaned the chunk on the button, prepped them both, applied the adhesive to the chunk and pressed it back into the divot. That seemed to work... and the mirror's still there 2 years later

I bought a new rearview mirror because my original one rattles when it gets hot. I assumed there was a set screw or something holding it to the button. If not, I am at risk of pulling the button off the windshield when I remove the old mirror?

On all the ones I've had, the button has two little "flaps" that can be bent in or out to adjust the tension on the mirror "arm." Pushing the flaps inward tightens the tension on the mirror arm. Pull the mirror out of the button, and you will see the little flaps on the button. You may be able to simply push those in a tiny bit to stop the rattling.

Dont try to remove the mirror from the button - there is a high chance something will break - it is a very very tight fit. I tried to separate them last month after I knocked mine off and the mount on the mirror arm cracked - meaning a $60 replacement for a new mirror. Just stick it back to the mirror as is.
