Mobil 1 vs Castrol full synthetic ?
I keep hearing Mobil 1 15w-50 is not what is once was. Why do people think so? I was just comparing it with Castrol 5w-50 and they both have all the same certifications. What is up?

I am not worried about the Mobil 1 causing leaks, I am worried about longevity of the engine. Has the lubricating performance diminished since the merger?

Well if it's so thin that it's leaking out the seals, on new seals, how well do you think it's protecting your engine? I think Mobil 1 has gone down since the merger.
It's your engine and your $$, including for Amsoil. I personally run Valvoline 20/50 racing oil, change it every 2500 miles in the street car and after every DE weekend in the race car. NO leaks, no smoke, and the track car catch can is almost empty after a full weekend of 16 sessions.

I was always a fan of Valvoline until I switched to Mobil 1. I just want the best protection for the Porsche engine, oil is cheap, even synthetic, compared to a new engine.

well guys, after reading the results of the magazine test that jet951 posted I think the royal purple oil speaks for itself....I was shocked to see just how bad the mobil 1 performed, I certainly wouldnt pay the premium for mobil 1 when its only mediocre oil..

I'm an ex Mobil1 users and I agree with others that quality seems to have gone south in recent years. Besides, nowadays I go out of my way not use Mobil products for other reasons. I switched to Red Line and, yes, there is a difference. Pressure stays noticably higher after hot runs and I can actually see the oil level on the dipstick. BMW dealers sell Castrol synthetic 10-60 imported specifically for M engines. The price is very attractive and I'm thinking of giving it a try.

Thanks Anthony that is the kind of info I am looking for. Just last year I saw the Jaguar and Porsche teams at ALMS using Mobil 1. I can't help but think if there were better oils they would be using them. Or maybe they are being paid??? Who knows?
