i've figured out the mystery;
injector 2 had a broken pin and was flowing 50% more fuel. this must have caused incomplete combustion in cylinder 2, which also caused backfiring, and also made it appear to be running rich(er).
it's getting fixed (replaced) so we'll see soon.
