Question Odd clicking sound from right rear??

Out of nowhere the other day my right rear starting making a funny clicking sound. It was totally out of the blue because I came to a stop at and intersection and when I went to take off the rear had a very external clicking sound. I have heard bad axles before and this sounds nothing like that, its a very even sound and sometimes goes away for a few days and then comes back, almost like something is tapping on something else. But a visual inspection has shown me nothing. My axles are in good shape so I really don't think they are the problem. I have also had a bad rear wheel bearing on a previous 951 so I know that is not the case either. Does anyone have any other ideas?

This may sound stupid...but maybe a stone/nail/screw stuck in the tire?

does the clicking speed up as you speed up. does it change to a lower pitch as you speed up or does it change to a higher pitch? or is it a steady click no matter if you stand still or if you drive. oh and i second check for a nail/screw in the tire

Shiners - That's funny - I bet you have a truck with deeper tire tread, huh?

Probably the cv - MAKE SURE THE BOLTS ARE NOT BACKING OUT - WHICH THEY WILL DO IF THEY WERE INSTALLED IN A CIRCULAR PATTERN INSTEAD OF CROSS-HATCH BY A GREEN MECHANIC.

my bet is the cv joint is going out. I had similar problems before sometimes it goes away then it comes back.

Pull it off, repack it with new grease and swap ends. you might get a few more miles out of it.

when you say "swap ends", do you mean right axle to left, or just flip the half-axle around (so outside boot is on the inside) on the same particular side?

also, can you please explain "INSTALLED IN A CIRCULAR PATTERN INSTEAD OF CROSS-HATCH "

thanks

The sound will click, but it doesn't change on turns at all and doesn't exactly sound like the same speed as I am going. It can be making a constant ticking (same speed of click) whether I am going 5mph or 20mph. I checked the bolts first thing since I have had them back out before on two previous 944 na's. And also no nail in the tire. The click sounds almost like the click you get from the brakes sometimes when you back up and then go forward, I have read a number of people having that click and some have said some clip in the caliper breaks or something, my dad's car has that click and I have yet to investigate, but its very similar except mine is continuous.

I have my axles off right now, I am going to clean them and repack them with new grease and swap them around.

CHAS - you have to insall those bolts to the proper torque like you would a wheel:
#1, #4, #2, #5, #3, #6
not: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 - BIG NO-NO
