Default CV Joint Grease

I want to clean out the joint grease while I have the tranny/axles out.

The boots are in fine shape so all I need is the grease that comes in the cute little packages. Where can I get this stuff? The local parts stores say you get it when you buy the boots but don't sell it by itself.

I use Redline synthetic grease but you may have to order it. Call some race shops in your area.

I have used Valvoline synthetic grease that also states on the tube that it is suitable for CV Joints. It is no longer available at the local auto parts store. DO NOT use any grease, such as Mobil 1 synthetic grease, that does not state on the package that it is suitable for CV Joints.

I also use Redline -- I think I might have gotten it from Paragon....

I've used Redline as well with good results.

f1rocks, how old are your boots? If they're more than, say 5 years, I'd go ahead and replace them while you have everything else off. Most boot kits also come w/ the cute little grease packs so you'd acquire those as well.

I have a small rip in my rr cv boot, and some resulting clicking in the cv. As a temporary fix, can I squeeze in some grease in the boot and seal it up? Where do you have to put the grease?

Ideally it should be packed into the CV itself, but its a moot point now. Just buy a rebuilt axle at some point IMHO, and swap that on. Once they start clicking, theres nothing that will stop it short of swapping the axle around or to the other side. Thats just a temporary measure.

Dismantling CV joints and putting them back together is an unholy pain in the ***. You need about four arms to do it, and more patience than the Budda.

yeah I know I should just replace the axle...seems TONS easier than repacking CV's. What is the tool you need....12mm cheesehead? 350ft/lbs torque? Seems like a really easy job to swap axles

Nope, all you need is the axle, the cheesehead (8MM I think, get the Snap-On one), a set of new bolts OR same sized Allen head bolts if you want to go that route, and a torque wrench good to 30ft/lbs or so. And some brake cleaner to clean the bolts out before trying to remove them.

If one of them rounds out, Sears carrys Bolt-Outs (or Easy-Outs, I can never remember which is which). Its a set of things that look like sockets, but inside they have a spiral teeth setup. You hammer them onto the nut, bolt, whatever, and twist with a wrench. Theyre one of the best investments ive made in tools.
