Default how cold is too cold? (oil)

as titled.

i'm planning a trip up to the sierra nevada next weekend, and everything was decently hunky dory until i realized that i'd be taking the p-car.

We're gonna be staying in North Lake Tahoe (more snow, less casinos, less party-kid asshats willing to do something to my car). i'm just wondering if there'd be any adverse effects of leaving the 951 out there (not sure if the hotel has a garage or not....probably does as it's a hotel/casino)

but JUST IN CASE. i want to know. how cold is too cold for 20W-50. i KNOW this sounds retarded to those who live in "regularly snowy" states.........but...........will my oil freeze? dont laugh, i'm a product of the california educational system. haha.

should i just take the crap-box Scion xB?

thanks for the help in advance.]

EDIT- sorry, got distracted. Highs/Lows for that weekend are 35F and 13F

so as long as i let my no-cat-chipped-extra-slightly-rich 951 run in a garage i should be ok?

does oil freeze? i thought it did at some point. i thought that's what the viscocity range thing was for.

Yes it will be fine. Well, At least open the garage door so you don't kill yourself.

It was pretty close to 0 here yesterday, and other than being a little slow to crank mine started just fine with 20w50. It does take it maybe .5-1 second for the oil needle to rise fully, but that was the only difference. I did let it idle for a good while to warm up though. As to the slow cranking, that could just be the battery being weak from the cold.

None synthetic 20-50 should be ok down to 11F

Yeah, my tires had absolutely ZERO grip yesterday, along with the fact that it started snowing before leaving work. Didn't do to bad though, as long as you don't get on the gas hard these cars have such poor low end torque that you don't have to worry about overpowering the tires.

20W50 is too thick for that weather, you are placing excessive wear on your engine.
Temps are around -10*C to +10*C here right now, and I'm running half Castrol 20W50, and half Castrol 5W30, this is too thick for this weather. The temps you are expecting are pretty close to what I have right now, and IMO take the scion, especially if you don't have winter tires.

the scion isnt exactly a......how to say politely.....NOT a ****box. i wouldnt expect it to climb a hill, much less the sierra nevadas. i'm not really looking at -10 to 10 degrees F, more like, 15-40 degrees F. the tires on the 951 have about.....6k on them, the scion's have about 23k..... tires on the 951 are falken fk451's, tires on the scion are michelin no-names with plenty of burnout attempts on them.

i guess i'll take it to my mech and get a coolant/brake/tranny/diff fluid flush.

Many areas have outlawed tire chains, especially many cities. You'd need to check the local laws before using tire chains. I'm not sure how they would affect the tires themselves, but I'd be leary of them damaging the rims.

Going below 11F would cause higher than normal wear theoretically because the lubrication properties are less effective at temps below 11F until the oil temp rises to an appropriate level. I would drain the 20w-50 and put a 5w-40 synthetic in.
This is what I am using right now
