MSD Ignition

MSD Ignition
Anyone have any experaince using an MSD 6200(6a) ignition and blaster coil on a 951? Did it help? I am going to replace my coil and thought I might as well make it an upgrade if there is any benifit.

The coil is fine, thats what I have, I had the 6a unit on also for a while and noticed no improvement at all. In fact, it would eat up plugs quicker and would run rough in wet weather.
I ended up removing the 6a.

We have seen many damaged DME (ignition part) that all had aftermarket ignition coil on them.. I strongly recommend you use the stock coil.. The WS is available, but it's totally different than just using a aftermarket coil.

The thing is that the MSD coils are designed to recieve 480 volts from a 6 series MSD amplifier.
The DME has a hard enough time opening injectors, nevermind supplying more than 12 volts to the OEM Bosch coil.
Better just to keep the coil that is designed to step up voltage from 12 volts only.

The car will run with the aftermarket coil, however without any warning the DME will die.. Initially I saw this on a 944NA with aftermarket coil, then few other cars using the same coil.. ST had a problem, David Floyd just had the ignition part of his DME go (Nology Coil I believe).. There is enough warnings and red flags, why risk it..

For sure you need to choose thew correct parts. I cannot remember what I was told, but I was told why certain coils are OK with Inductive Igniters and others are special to CDI. Some here will be able to add to this.
I think the best solution is still an aftermarket EFi system. This way you can choose the type, the type of Ignition, run that either sequentially, or Wasted spark, and even choose the Distributor or direct. This way you can control the Coil with dwell if you go Inductive, and have the ability to use higher AMP rated Igniters.
Then all of the other features come into play. Better, newer harness'es, Fuel control, Boost control etc.
Just need to get them down in price, and to have reaaly good controls.

MSD has a .8 0hm resistor that goes with there 12 Volt coil! I might install a MSD 6a system
Maybe! Might be a big waste of money if I want more HP probably ought to look into like vitesse or ect.
Go where guy are already making HP and you can only improve. That is the truth!

Yes its a waste of money - I was looking for more low end grunt (MSD claims a hotter low rpm spark) I have the 6a ignition , blaster coil, magnecor 8.5mm wires and beru silvers - approx $400 for all - NADA!! maybe a smoother idle but no change in power- if given another chance I would have purchased an exhaust!! (it would have blown the same smoke up my *** as did the MSD website)

Without a doubt, one of the best mods I ever bought for my car, period. Once again John is "the man". And I'm just a very happy customer saying this too. If you go to my home page, you can see a few pics of how one can look with an MSD coilpack set-up too.
