Turbo S versus 968, would I really be upgrading?
Ok, don't know how many of you guys have owned both an 88/89 Turbo S and a 968, but I'm thinking about selling the 951S and getting a 968 coupe. The main reason is my wife just doesn't care for the 944 front end, and likes the looks of the 968 much better. Am I going to be seriously dissapointed with going to a 968 powerwise? My Turbo S is making about 280rwhp, which looks to be about 80rwhp over what a stock 968 makes. Also, the Turbo S has the M030 and LSD which seem to be somewhat hard to find on the 968. Also, I've done basically all the mechanical work that can be done on the 951S (clutch, headgasket, rebuilt turbo, etc), whereas I may have to do all that work again depending on the 968 I find. On the plus side for a 968, they are newer, and I could find one that doesn't need the cosmetic repairs my Turbo S does (needs seats recovered, minor nose work and a paint job).
Oh yeah, guess I should say that the car will be used as a daily driver and DE car (but no autox).
Thoughts, suggestions?

well,if your going to use the 968 for daily driving,id take the 968.but if your looking for power and somewhat of track time,951S hands down.youll be hard pressed when you see how much you gotto spend to get some decent power out of a 968.

Evan, as you know, I had both a very well sorted out S2 and a 951. The S2/968 wins hands down in the city driving, and is great on the highway, but there is NO substitute for boost. I had the opportunity to drive Dave's 968 when he had it, and no mistakes about it, it was a quick car, but if you're coming from a 951, let alone a modified 951 you will be in boost withdrawl.
From a reliability standpoint, the 968 will be better, as long as you keep up with the maintenance. But then again, my 951 never let me down either, and the one I'm building won't let me down. It all comes down to maintenance. For DE's the linear power band of the big 3.0l engine is nice, I played with a nice new Boxster S at the DE that I attended, but the 951 ahead of me left me in the dust.
Keep the 951.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm thinking. I actually enjoy the 951S even as a daily driver, sure it's a little stiff, but hey it's a sports car. Plus with the mods I've done, the boost hits really hard right at 3000rpm and is a real blast. Considering how much of a horse power junkie I am, I think the 968 would be a big let down, and I'd be figuring out some way to turbo it soon after I bought it. That of course, would be really big $$.

Evan, the 968 will buy you looks but besides that it will disappoint you in power/handling and braking compared to your turbo S. This is compaing a stock 968 to your M030 951 S.
Boost is addictive and you might think you are not an addict until you no longer get your dose, lol. You will go through the withdrawal. I see a lot of ex 951/S owners go through it and in the end they end up with a $50-80K 968 turbos .

hehe I know the feeling, the minister of finance has spoken, get the 968 they have great resell value and it sounds that you will take good care of her. best thing happens you either like it or you hate it. if you hate it you would look sad alot and she will see how sad it makes you look not having the turbo and either let you sell it and get another turbo or give you more perks either way you will come out a winner

Don't even think about it. The 968 has a longer nose and you will need to swap everything ahead of the dors to perform this. This is not how you want to blow your money. It is NOT the same car.

A good argument to your wife might be that on the inside both cars are the same and that mechanical and body parts are cheaper and have better availability compared to the 968.
