There are many confusing differences due to the fact that there were 924 GTRs and GTPs and 944 GTRs and GTPs. The 924 GTPs had boxed rockers where as the GTRs had the ralleye flares but occasionally you would find a GTR with boxed rockers.

On the 944 GTR/GTP variants they all had boxed rockers and the GTR/GTP part would be determined by the front facia. Some had the stock 951 nose style from Fabcar while others retained a funtional hood and a NA 944 front bumper style such as the Electrodyne car pictured above.

All of the 944 GTR/GTP cars were tube frame while from my research it looks like a 75/25 split of tube frame cars and unibody chassis for the 924 GTR/GTP series.

Actually i got confirmation that the engine shot with webbers was a full tube frame car run in the SCCA either built or owned by Dave Finch.

Thanks for clearing this up. Sounds and looks like you have it correct.

Only thing I would add is that the 16v head on the 81 car was not the same as the 928S4/944S 16v. The 81 was an early prototype head that was used in LeMans. There are very few shots of that early 16v head and the one I posted is as close a look as I have seen.

Thanks for the good thread.

No problem, there is so much confusion on the subject of these cars its so hard to keep it all straight. I'm trying to become an unofficial expert on them as very soon I'll have one that looks just like the real thing with its "clothes" on Blame the PCA rule book for the not-so-extreme approach.

Default Jan 9 And No Pics?

Guns, what's the deal no new pics or updates to share with us? So you are just focusing now on the bodywork, right? Everything else regarding the engine, suspension, etc is on hold?

Those are some sweet pics, so thanks for sharing! I am sure Guns will appreciate them too. And you've been a member since 2003 and have 18 posts, where have you been? J/K.

Okay - now THAT car looks good!
With PROPERLY sized slick/sidewall, not some modern Battelstar Gallactica "dub" 19 inch with a 1/2 inch sidewall on an 80's car.

Slivel, OMG dude do you have any vids or sound clips? Wow, this came right out of left field! Is there any way you can email me the hi res versions of these pics for my body shop (guns951@gmail.com)? Thank you so much for posting, any information and insight would help so so much. Also please post/email as many pics as you have, this is what I've been looking for forever!

How does the front attach to the chassis? any close ups of the latching mechanisms?

And close ups of the spoiler? The inner fender work for the rear?

BTW is there any chance its for sale?

I think this is what everyone is saying! I don't have the money for one, but I'm sure i could justify getting one to my bank!

I've never seen a picture of that head yet, cool that it doesn't have chains driving the second cam!

Here is a bit of information I had gathered, to be used in my 944 resource, but feel free to use it as well, just give me credit is all I ask:

The 944 GTP/R (the Boss sponsored car that members have been linking pictures to) was a one off Le Mans prototype car built by Porsche in '81 for the '82 Le Mans race.

The 944 GTP/R Le Mans was a Porsche factory dedicated 1982 Le Mans racer. It was a one off prototype built by Porsche specifically for the 24 hour Le Mans race. According to Porsche, the GTP, although featuring virtually the same 2479cc engine as the later production models (save the DOHC featured in the GTP), produced a staggering 410 bhp at 6500 RPM. Moreover, the car’s top speed was estimated to be over 185 mph. Although the GTP wasn’t expected to succeed at Le Mans, it came in seventh place overall - quite a success in and of itself, never mind the fact that the GTP spent the least amount of time in the pits of all the teams that competed.[1]

The 1989 Porsche Dealer Directory booklet detailed the 944 GTP:[2]

Engine: Four-cylinder, four-valve, in-line, water-cooled, turbo engine, two belt-driven overhead camshafts
Output: 410 bhp at 6500 RPM
Displacement: 2479 cc/151.2 ci
Fuel system: Bosch, full-electronic
Driveline: Four-speed gearbox, limited-slip differential, transaxle layout
Chassis: Unitary steel body, plastic skin, independent suspension, coil springs, vented disc brakes
Dimensions and weight: Wheelbase 93.6 in, length 163.8 in, weight 2094 lbs
Performance: Top speed 186 mph
Chassis No of museum car: 924 006

Below are some pictures by Porsche AG of the 944 GTP/R:
