To the benefit of everyone looking for a wasted spark ignition...
I remembered when I had a cavalier Z-24, the ignition module had burned down due to a starter cable slowly rubbing against the coil bolts. When I replaced the module, it had a crank trigger for the module itself and the ECU just gave it the timing. These modules are intelligent enough to determine w/o an ECU, to which coil to fire.
Here's an interesting site:

Also, some people have been using it for Hot Rodding...

Hey Marc, are those your secret laser cannons that you use for passing uncooperative 993's, in the avatar?
Dr. Dynamics good job on finding some info on WS. This is just starting to become a popular subject here on the board. It's been around for a long time, in other apps, as well as Tec 3 and some other systems for our cars. It's important to make sure that p[eople know that the Vitesse WS system uses the existing motronic system whereas others do not. In essence that product uses the existing brain in our cars, where others are part of total stand alone management systems. Otherwise they are basically the same concept in final operation.
There have been a few other threads on this topic lately. Anyone coming here might want to do a search for both WS and wasted spark. There is at least one post that you will find that gives a really good link to the differences. If I find it, I'll post it here.

Here's sort of a laymens description as well. Experts feel free to jump in
The distributor uses ONE coil, which operates on every spark. Using multiple coils can eliminate the distributor: one per cylinder, or one per cylinder pair. The wasted spark method fires two cylinders (pairs) simultaneously, one in the exhaust and one in the firing cycle. There are coils available with two high-tension leads for this purpose. The differences between a distributor system and a multi-coil (MC) system are:
1) Wasted spark firing eliminates the distributor and its associated mechanical faults.
2) Multi-coil (wasted spark) systems have only ONE spark gap, and deliver more spark energy.
3) Multi-coil systems deliver more spark energy, because each coil has more time for re-charging.

so what would the advantages be on installing this to a mild/moderately modded 951? about how much would this cost? seeing as how this system (listed here) is a kind of "plug and pay" (from what i understand), and can set itself to fire correctly......what would be the process to install this for a DIY'er? or should we all just wait for Vitesse WS? anyone?

Hey Juan,
As best I can recall, special tool, ran into problems with the stock ignition at over 350 or 400 hp. A lightly modded car, with a properly functioning stock ignition system, probably has no real need for WS. It is sort of something you may want, but don't need. If you have a highly modded car, like Rolex, or Defastest, or st, then you need a hotter spark at a more precise time in order to manage your fuel/air burning more precisely and effectively.
