1989 944 Turbo
Hey guys I might be buying a 1989 951. After selling my 968 I wanted to stay with a Porsche. From what I've read the 951 can be modified easier than the 968. What mods would you guys recommend to start off with, like with kind of exhausts, chips, ect...

It is cheaper to make the 951 faster than the 968. Chip it and you are there.
After that, you can swap out the turbo, get a MAF, proper software, exhaust, etc and you are 400 RWHP!!
Ok, it is a little tougher than it sounds!!
Check out www.vitesseracing.com for one of their kits. I had the stage 2 and loved it.
Then check out www.speedforceracing.com for their exhaust systems.
Get the 3" downpipe, test pipe, and catback. Put that together with the Vitesse stage 2, tial wastegate and your car will be over 350 RWHP at a modest boost and pump fuel all day long.
(With an INSANE powerband!)
I know someone else will say this, but make sure your engine is in tip top shape before you start with the mods. Vac lines, hoses, sensors, etc.
Have fun!

The only issue with modifying the 89 951 is they command a premium over the non-S spec 951s and you usually end up taking off parts that define it as an S when you mod the engine.
Unless you get one in which the suspesion is still good and you don't plan to remove the turbo.
An non-S 951 can be bought for much less than the 89 and can be easily modified to exceed the performance of the S cars.
It all depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.....

Yea, but I don't think you get the blinking door locks on the earlier cars, easily worth the premium.
Seriously if you think you are going after more than 300 bhp, an earlier car will be a better deal. If you want something a little faster than a 968, an '89 with chips and a shimmed wastegate is all you need. I was ready to buy a nice 968 until I drove an '89 951 (now mine ). Much more fun to me than the 968.

I've learned that if I were to buy a 951 with the intention of modifying it for performance, a good condition 86 is the best base. They are lighter to begin with, you don't have to worry about air bags, and give you the largest sampling as there were more manufactured in 86 than any other year. The only real con is the offset which can easily be overcome by putting on the spindles from a later car.

Ditto the suggestion on buying an '86: Relatively more bang for the buck than'89, cheaper going in, and probably more mod options for greater performance at less cost.

I talked to him on AIM yesterday, and the deal he is getting on this turbo S is about where a non-s should be.
I don't think we are going to be able to talk him out of it!

So I talked to Tim from speed force racing yesterday and ordered the cat-back system for the 951, with Borla exhaust. Should get here sometime next week, can't wait.

Cantal10: I hope you love the car!
Stephenwz968: Good idea. You see where I live in NJ, right? We should all keep in touch, and get together say in the Spring 2006? I'm still building up my car, and then it goes in the glass box for the winter.
