Default OK Mystery clicking/racheting is making me crazy

Everyone once and a while my car starts making is loud clicking/racheting noise from somewhere behind me..

I cant really tell where its comming from.. it increses frequency with acceleration but get quieter.. and is worst (loudest) when you are going very slow.. it also changes intensity when turning

It will quite randomly start doing this.. and then just as randomly stop.. compleatly.. like nothing was wrong.. like today after about 15-20 mins it was gone..

and then a few weeks later its back again for a day or so..

My best guess is one of the CV's are going bad.. but I really have no clue..

any ideas?

Check the coupling that connects the splined end of the torque tube shaft to the gearbox input shaft too. Both bolts should be properly located in their respective recess.
The cv's can be cleaned, inspected and repacked. The axles can then be turned around but kept on the same side. They'll be driving on fresh faces and the working angularity of the cv's changed too. Only a couple of degrees in it though.

The odds point heavily to the CV joints. They regularly go bad on these cars and act exactly as you describe when they are going out. You can replace/repack/rebuild the joints themselves, or just get new or rebuilt axles/joints for a few dollars more (944online.com sells rebuilt axles for $135 each).

OK, so i have a few questions..

How sucessful have people been swapping sides and repacking? i am assuming this is the least expensive option..

how are the rebuilt units? what exactly is done to them? whos are the best..

are any upgraded cv joints available? I have an 87

Repacking is very straight forward, but extremely messy. Cleaning out the CVJ and repacking them re-defined the term messy to me, otherwise it is very easy and straight forward. All you need is a 8mm 12-point tool, a torque wrench and some molly based grease (black in colour).

As for GKN Motorsports, lindsey have the axle assembley (which contain the CVJ). I got just the GKN CVJ, four of them still in the box sitting in my room, they were a gift from my step-father, which he got from Germany.

Click here contact their motorsports division.

Hi Hos
How much better are these that the stock 951 ones ?
What is the model # for their part that fits our cars
I checked out the link but its not that user friendly
Is there a diff between the TS and the stock turbo on this part ?
And Finally what would be the expected cost in US $ ?
Thanks in advance
Regards
Ed

Ed,
My step-father got them to me as a gift, so i really can't say much on how they perform, and i don't know the prices.

As i said, Lindsey have the COMPLETE axle, which comes with both CVJ. Did anyone try contacting them and asking fi they could get just th CVJ? it would make things a lot easier right?

Also, i don't know if there would be a difference between the S and standard turbo models, since my car is an 86. As far as i know, GKN is the OEM supplier for CVJ's, as well as their boot kits. I didn't contact GKN myself, but here is the link to their motorsports division:

I am just going to order 4 new cv joint kits.. because by the time you pay for shipping your core parts back to 944 online you could have the new joints from paragon. I asked the people at 944 online and they only replace the visably work out parts.. I would rather have all new joints..

Here is my new problem.
i have a 87.. aparently I may have the 25 spline or the 33 spline axels..

is there an easy way to tell which one i have?

Missing,
I actually have swapped one CV from my 88 NA into my 86 Turbo, no problems. I was also confused with the number of splines and finding out which ones would fit, but the one from my 88 car fitted normally in my 86 turbo.

I am sure it dosent make a difference when you use a whole new assembly..
as the axel is contained and splined to match the cv joints..

Anyway I went ahead and ordered 2 new complete assembeled axels with cv's
and a new odometer gear..

the car has over 160K on the chassis.. and i looekd though the PO's recipts last night.. they are the orig parts.. so I think they deserve to be replaced..

Also how easy are these to replace?

is it as simple as removing the 6 bolts on each side and pounding the old ones out and slipping the new ones in?
