Default good mid-price tire?

im looking for new tires, but wish to only spend 300-400 on the set from a place like tirerack. leads to two questions: 1) what do you recommend and 2) should i go 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 or instead go 225/50/16 and 245/45/16? im looking for decent performance but also decent longevity and rain performance. if i had the money id be getting f1 gs-d3s but i cant cough up that much cash.

i used to have Yoko Avid H4's on my n/a, those were really nice and only 350 for all 4 inc. mounting/balancing. on my turbo, i had AVS ES100's, which were decent, but not great, and they cupped really easily. right now i'm running Falken FK-451's which look great and stick real good, too, it was about 450-500 to get them on the car, IIRC. that's my $.02 USD.

Khumos 712's: Gave me ~ 30k miles on my Celica with a couple of SoloXs. Good wet treaction the first 20k. They are not the greatest traction, definetly not Pzeroes or S-02s, but pretty decent as an overall tire.
I also think the Falkens are even cheaper.

I've had good luck with ES100's. Haven't experienced cupping.

My last ones got noisy though near the end.

most tire guys i've talked to do not reccoment khumos for these cars. i even had a set of falken 512 (i believe that's the number, discontinued now) on my old supra and they were very predictable especially in the wet, i assume the 451's are the better, or maybe it's just because i have much better suspension in this car than my supra. but i reccomend the 451's. the only reason i'll be replacing them is because i'm running -2.5 degrees of camber in the front and -1.0 in the rear.

yeah, my ES100's were REAL loud towards the end, as in like, 20-25mph and up. the cupping was a bad shock, but yeah, the falkens have very little road noise for how well they stick.

Yoko avs es 100's are what im running! So far I really am liking them alot, had them for about 5k! I paid about 430 shipped from tire rack! I have also been told that the khumo 712's are not a great tire on these cars. But so far my tires are doing me great!
Good luck

Fuzion. As a street tire that works acceptably in normal driving and in the rain I'm satisfiedecially for the price. No complaints.

I second Fuzion's, particularily the ZRi, I've never tried the HRi's, but I am extremely impressed with the ZRi's. I now have 3 auto-x events on mine, and I can't detect any wear at all. They're very nice in the rain as well. Shed the water very quickly, and help resist hydroplaning. Although, they don't hold on icy roads worth crap, but they're a summer tire...
Besides, my front's were just over $100 each, and the rears are about $115 (CDN).

712s are unsafe on the track, no traction when warm! Nice looking though.

Kumho Ecsta MX - I have about 1000 miles on them, loved every mile on the street, smooth ride, good grip. Just got back from my 1st time with them on the track - excellent! Super traction, no loss as they heat up. Couldn't be happier with a street tire. Also very good in the wet. Large grooves, big side blocks with water passages.

But I don't know if they are available in other than 17in size.

712s are aweful in my opinion. I have ES 100s and they are decent, the best tires I have driven have been the BFG KDW 2s. My friend had ES 100s and 712s on his Z and then put the KDWs huge difference. I know that is what I am trying next. I have Avid H4s on my daily and I like them a lot that is coming from michelins. Much much better traction, this is also on 114hp Volvo. Not saying much. Oh and ES 100s are extremely noisy especially highway speeds.

Another vote for the Fuzion ZRi. I put them on my Firehawk to replace some BFG KDWs, and they are awesome tires. Best tire for the money by far, and are actually better than the BFGs without even taking price into consideration. As to the Kumho 712s, they were on the 951 when I bought it, and I was not very impressed with them. They still had well over half the tread left and they just weren't very good in the wet or dry.

For the price, you won't beat the Fuzion ZRi.

I've got the Fuzion ZR-1's on two cars and have done many tire comparisons., The Fuzions are hands down better than the Kumho 712's(squirmy when hot, noisy), and considerably better than than the ES-100's(fast wear and noisy after 5K) on the other car. I sold the Kumhos at less than 20% wear I hated them so much on the 951. The price is less than the ES-100 and about the same as the Kumho if you shop them.
