Thanks again for your efforts Brad, I was one of the guys that just needed the tapped plug, tried tapping the turbo return banjo with the result being a broken tap. The VDO gauge is a nice match with the factory gauges, its showing about 190 deg f. in normal driving. I've got the LR gauge panel with boost/vacuum, EGT and oil temp, tapped into the stashtray lead so they dim with the other gauge lights.

My VDO gauge is in the mail right now as we speak.

I should get the sender and gauge in my 944 race car this weekend. I will post some pics. The weeknd of sept 24, 25 is my next race weekend so it will post my results with it.

It should be nice test as air temps will probably hit 100F. I wonder how hot the oil will get.

I do have turbo oil cooler in the car so hopefully it will keep the temps in check. Now I have the tools to find out.

Now I really know what's going on.

Thanks, Brad

Stupid question, but just what kind of connector fits onto that prong on the drain plug?

Will it come with whatever oil temp gauge I buy?
I've never seen one like that...
Anyhoo, I'll be picking up an oil temp gauge in the next week or two, and it will finally fill the other spot in my A-pillar!
The drian plug goes in next weekend (not this one) with the next oil change, and head work being done at the same time.

Zero, any type of spade connector will work (the female end). You will likely need to buy wire (i forget the exact gauge) from your local electronic (Radioshack) to wire everything up. Its a good idea to wrap it in any type of insulation you can find at the autostore, especially on the turbo cars which run much hotter.

Basically everything you need to wire up the car short of the sender, plug and gauge is available at RadioShack.

For those running the gauges already, what type of temperatures are you seeing? I tried doing the sender on my own a few months ago, did not turn out well as i believe i used to much teflon tape making the sender insufficiently grounded. Temperature rarely goes higher than 110 degrees sitting in traffic even. I know this will vary based on ambient temperature and the fact i have a n/a car...but was just hoping to get an idea as to whati 'should' be seeing.

Edit -

Something like this...

Mine reads 190 degrees on the highway, 220 in stop and go driving.

It is important to not use too much teflon tape. I used two wraps on the ones I made, and tested every one with the ohmeter.

Stupid question, but mine does not have a spade terminal on it. It has like a little post on it, a thin shaft with a flat round section on top.
I expected a spade terminal really, but this confuses me.

That is a round spade terminal.

I installed my temp sender and gauge today.

No problems, but I did have to rig up some clips to hole the sender wire and keep it away from the exhaust.

Here is pic with the VDO gauge. I only idled the car but got the oil temp to about 150 F. Note at this temp the ext oil cooler is still cold. I guess the t-stat on the oil cooler opens higher than this.

Next to the oil temp is the factry oil pressure gauge (early cars).

The VDO gauge has a very factory look and the sender works like a charm.

I will post more after next weekend's race.
