oil question
I just bought my car and I'm running low on oil. Well i cant change the oil untill the oil filter comes in the mail. Would it be ok to add 5w 30 to top it off?

I can't see why not. What is the current level? What is in there now? If you know match that. Do you have any leaks? Thicker oils tend to leak less.

DO NOT LET THIS CAR GET MUCH UNDER FULL OF OIL! you have been warned. do a search for #2 rod bearing failure. Keep her really close to full at all times, and I guarantee, she'll leak a bit somewhere when cold, so make it a habit to KNOW your oil level on this car. as said... Welcome. When you change, look into AGIP 20w 60. Do a search for the user name special tool. You will find an oil thread with good info about all of the different oil choices. E

Under 1/2 full of oil or under halfway between the marks on the dipstick? HUGE difference between the two. The dipstick marks are 1 quart apart if I remember correctly. The car will hold over 6 quarts.

Halfway between the marks on the dipstick.
"do a search for #2 rod bearing failure"
I've done a little, but I thought that as long as I dont autocross the car it would be ok.

There is a big difference between having 1/2 mark on the dipstick when the car is warm and when the car is cold. Usually, 1/2 mark on the dipstick means you need just over 0.5 liters of oil, but when the car is warm, that 0.5 liters is taken from the pan and pumped around the engine, hence you would have a full mark (or near that) when cold.
Don't over fill, make sure you measured on a flat surface and note the difference between hot and cold engines (note it takes roughly 8 hours for most of the oil to return back to the pan for more accurate readings on the dipstick).

smiths944t,
If the engine is cold and you got 1/2 mark on the dipstick tube, expect to add just over 0.5 liters to the full mark.
Remember, once you start the engine, the mark on the dipstick WILL drop
