Alternator cooling duct question
Hey, anyone know offhand what the size of the alternator cooling duct is? I picked up a 2-1/2" dia. duct yesterday (generic air duct) to replace my mashed/mangled/crushed/fraying/grease-saturated/chewed-up/scorched/discombobulated/f-ed up/deteriorating/failing old one yesterday. I brought the old duct into the store and matched it up as closely as I could with the assortment of sizes and it looks like a 2-1/2" will work, but I just haven't crawled under there yet to install it. Anyone done this? Just want to make sure it's likely to fit before I take it out of the package and render it non-returnable. Thanks.

I just measured the stock one and it was 6 inches across. (outside diam) Hose connection is 2 1/4.
Unless I'm thinking of a diff. part (I'm talking about the b;ack think on back of the Alt.)

It's 60 mm on both the alternator and the bumper end. 2.36 inches and change. 2 1/4 would be ideal as long as it's relatively flexible, but there isn't such a critter in any good hose materials.
Worst case use JB weld or something and build up the outside of the ducts enough that you can get the 2 1/2" hose to crimp down decently. It may not be pretty but it'l work fine and give you the option of using pretty much any kind of duct hose if you want to. Seems like just about everything is available in 2 1/2" hose.

Okay yea - I might need to add a little PVC sleeve or something but I'll try it. I actually noticed the clamp I took off the stock hose was a TAD smaller than the 2-1/2" one, but it still might work. If not I'll look for some way to build up a sleeve / adaptor ring. I actually looked for 2-1/4" dia. hose but no dice.

Well I have mine off, I was just wondering for emwporsche how he lost the duct if the pans were on. . . IIRC the duct is protected from below by the batwing and front portion of the pan.

I used a piece of brake cooling duct to replace mine. It happened to be lying around in my specialist's workshop but it was the brown stuff Demon Tweeks sell in the UK. It fitted so well I only put a hose clamp on the body end.
