Default '86 951 turbo replacement

I am beginning the process of replacing my turbo - picked up a rebuilt & slightly modded one off of eBay (looks fine, no play, so we'll hope for the best). While I'm in there, anything else I should attend to? I plan to install some manner of heat barrier/reflector around the turbo to try & keep the intake manifold cooler. I also will be installing a Lindsey Racing PCV collector can, and plan to remove as much of the unused PCV hose network as I can. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Check all the lines and piping while you have everything apart. It's a long tedious and unpleasant job, but you'll learn quite a bit about the car in so doing.

BTW order replacement turbo bolts ahead of time so when you round them out (allen heads) you're not waiting for them to show up. And loosen the PS rack to get at them - it makes it a helluva lot easier and takes about 15 extra minutes - if that.

The Lindsey split cross-over pipe is a great "while you in there" upgrade.

Yes David!

You'll find out the 86's have a 1peice cross-over pipe. Which makes doing anything with the turbo or rear of the engine a huge PITA! I would highly suggest getting a 2peice cross-over pipe, either used or new one from LR.

Trust me, i'm allready wishing I would of replaced my 1peice.

Definetely... I have the lindsey part.
Chris White can can also do the modification, although he does it with a bolted flange. Chris is much more local, so you will probably get faster service if time is of the essence.

Thanks all.

Ordered the Venturi delete kit, and it will go in along with the crankcase breather setup later this week (along with the Autothority Stage 2 chips & banjo bolt; plan to remove the Lindsey Boost Enhancer).

Now, what's the deal on the cycling valve....can it be deleted, what will that do for me, and what other part(s) do I need to add? I've searched here, but didn't find a clear explanation. Would I need to change out my waste gate?

Last ?s: good source for replacement fuel lines? And when would I need a 3.0 BAR fuel pressure regulator?

Thanks in advance :-)

At the moment, my digital still camera's missing - I plan to find or replace it within the week, and if the car's apart at that point I will post a bunch.

Called Dave @ Lindsey, and here's what we came up with: ditching the cycling valve, installing a manual boost controller in place of the Boost Enhancer, and running the factory banjo bolt with the AutoThority stage II chipset. I plan to (and it won't be pretty) completely wrap the intake manifold with an insulating blanket, and that should accomplish what I was looking to do, and that's keep heat away from the intake air. I also blan to blanket the exhaust headers & wrap the turbo pipes, from the header to the turbo to the cat.

Now, I just have to get the turbo out...

I agree with coating exhaust stuff and can see a definite advantage to ceramic coating those items but not sure how you would accomplish wrapping the intake or the benefits of doing it? Just thinking out loud here

It removes all the usless hoses from under the intake. Doesn't help much and don't hurt anything either, just makes it easier to work on. (also deletes the CV, one less part to worry about breaking)

I wonder about wrapping things that are normally air cooled, is that a good idea ? If u wrap the turbo won't it just fry the bearings, where is all that heat going to go ? I would think if u want to make things cooler u should add something to increase cooling air flow, not add something that's going to contain heat.
