Default Stock AFM Defective -- Replace or Upgrade?

Just got the word from the shop, my stock AFM is causing my car's stumbling problems. Apparantly, the flapper is sticking and/or providing incorrect voltage readings to the ECU, causing a lean condition by not openning my injectors enough for the amount of air coming in. This is setting off my knock censors no doubt and causing the car to stumble to save itself. [or something to that affect]

SO... They already put a used AFM on the car and it is now running fine and actually better than it was before with my AFM before it started all this. So we know that's the problem.. I asked how much a new AFM is and he said around $650 but he had the used one and we said it was $300-$350 (can't remember which).. Does this sound right for a used / tested AFM?

Now, my options are to buy the used AFM that he's already got installed or take this opportunity to upgrade to a MAF. I talked with John Vitesse and told him the situation and that I couldn't afford his full turbo/MAF upgrade at this time. He said he would work with me on the upgrades if I wanted to eventually get the turbo down the road. So this option is to spend around $1200 on the MAF upgrade.

Option 1: Buy new AFM - $650 plus install
Option 2: Buy the already installed used AFM - $350
Option 3: Buy MAF from Vitesse (no PB) - $1200 plus install
Option 4: Get MAF from LR - $699 + $299 for PowerPerfect + install

I'd sell you a used AFM for $100 if budget is an issue.

This all depends on your wallet and the level of pain that it can endure. I would find it hard to purchase a new AFM if I already have a used one in my car that works. Having already taken the steps towards the dark side of more boost (pass the pipe please), I vote MAF. The best part is that you’ve chosen the right tuner in the first place and I hate you for it

well, I'm not entirely set on Vitesse. I've yet to hear a bad remark of the man, but Lindsey is within driving distance and the prices are substantially lower. Any type of upgrade I do is going straight on the credit card... I'd be able to pay for the used AFM and work that's already been done out of pocket,so that's a big plus -- and my wife would be much more pleased, but it's a tough choice to buy a stock part when I could upgrade and gain so much -- espescially since I had planned on this upgrade down the road anyway! I'm still not sure which tuner to go with yet, though.

I'm wondering if John (porshhh951) will jump in here and give me some advice -- I know he's a lindsey guy and has been there several times... John?

I just sold a perfectly tested and working AFM for $50 to a local 'lister. They can be had for much less than you were quoted.

it's not a vendor thing. They'll both give you great service and good products. Vitesse chips+ maf will be set and forget. LR has a good system as well, and they're close. I'm a fan of a really well programed chip, so Vitesse would get my business, and will, but you have AFM options, that look awfully resonable. So what do YOU want to do?

Your best bet would be to do the whole thing at once IMO. Wait for the MAF when you have the $$ for t he set. I, too, have a used AFM I'd be happy to sell. For $50 - $100 that's a cheap fix for these cars. You can install it in what?, 2.6 seconds or something?

the advice i got from john was roughly not to bother with a MAF unless you are upgrading the turbo.

2.6 seconds? Well maybe if you're Wonder Woman!....Ohh wait...She is.
I saw the pics from the 944 Fester. Great job on the car Michelle.
