Default O/T vw corrado opinions

anyone ever drive a VW corrado with the V6? looking for opinions on the car, a friend of a friend is selling one and it looks pretty nice, 5spd, tan leather, green ext. a mod or two. according to the friend it rides like my 944 turbo and i was wondering if any of the technology from our cars was incorperated into the corrado or just if people like the car or not.

im not saying im trading my 951 for a corrado, that would be a lil ridiculous but my bro is looking for a car, he currently drives a 86 n/t nissan 300zx auto so he could use a lil bit more of a sports car.

thanks
AJ

See it as a Golf GTI Coupé since that is what it is. I like them.

loved mine. Watch that the rear spoiler works properly though. If they go wrong, it can get pricey.

I really liked mine. It handles very well for a front driver. It will run circles around a 944na. Easy to work on and drive train parts are inexpensive and easy to come by.

Friend of mine has one. Also watch out for the sunroof and the alarm, if they are acting strange it can cause some serious problems. Besides that they are fun cars to drive. I would never trade my turbo for one, never. But they are really torqey and are fun to drive. First thing to do is lower it though

I always tried to link the Corrado with the '90-91 Audi Coupe Quattro...

I almost bought one of these before deciding on my e36 w/ LSD (and snow tires) for my winter car/daily driver.

An Audi CQ with the I-5 turbo motor would be FUN.

So I guess this whole post is pretty off topic when asking for opinions on Corrados, so my answer is just "consider an Audi CQ instead".

The corrado VR6's are fun cars but maintenance intensive and have a very high parts cost. Watch out for door handles that break, head gaskets that leak around cyl #1, bad timing chain guides and tensioners, bad coolant after run pumps, bad sunroof, bad wing motor, bad seatbelt motors.

These cars can bury you very quickly and stuff that literally costs $10 for a Golf/Jetta will cost over $100 for the corrado...

I had a G60 Corrado for 5 years and loved it! My car had zero mechanical issues in 127K miles. Car handled competently, and felt very solid at high speeds. I don't believe you can compare VW maintenance to Porsche maintenace - they are in two different leagues.

I think porsche help design the Corrado. Nice cars you can put a 6 speed addition and a super charger or a turbo couple of friends have it. Nice car.

One of the guy's here has a '93 Corrado 6 in a '91 GTI, and with a Procharger on it. It makes 280hp at the wheels on our Mustang Dyno.

Bulletproof engine, he drives the crap out of it-

A neighbor used to have one with a S/C on it. He broke a lot of motor mounts, but how much of that can be contributed to the extra oomph he had is a good guess.

I always liked those cars. I surfed some VW forums to get a feel for them, and the consensus was what docwyte said.

Probably like 951s, getting one that's had proper maintenance makes a big difference in owner experience.

I owned a '93 corrado VR6 that had been impeccably maintained. It practically put me in the poor house within 10 months of owning it. While you may scoff that maintaining a 951 costs way more than a VW, I can say with some confidence NOT this VW!

So I guess I'm the only one with the Audi CQ fetish? Doesn't anyone else at least see the similarity?

BTW, I checked Vortex after making that post and found a couple CQ's that looked to be in pretty good shape for CHEAP.

You're not the only one. I used to have a 90 sedan and drolled over the CQ. I was looking for a Corrado when I found the 951. I still wonder what mihgt have been

Dan- I see the similarity too- I always equated them w/being the FWD version of the BMW 318ti, only w/a decent engine, too...

The '93 & '94 VR6 Corrado would be cool- wouldn't want a '92- the interior was changed, etc... also, late in 93, they went distributorless- I'd rather have that too- A friend went throuhg 3 of them- two late 93's & one 94... They were impressive... The gearing is too short- a Jetta or GTi final drive 3.38 down from a 3.65) helps that out, &, as has already been said, you can make it into a 6-sp- I'd do both... redlining top gear @ 144 or so is a little ridiculous, IMO... Anyway, they are cool cars, but, pricey to mod- there are lots of views on this though- I kind of hate VW b/c of them- they talk about all these high-powered VR6's now- they went to almost 210HP severl years ago- Big-f**ing-deal- the Euro VR6 Corrado had 192 in 1992 w/the 2.9L... Then, they have the 240HP 3.2... Again, big deal- the were guys running around in 1994 w/>250FWHP w/3.1L's... They paid a pretty penny though... I've even seen a bored one that supposedly did >260HP... Always wanted to find out how far one could go- maybe turbo-charged 3.5L bore & stroke...? I don't know... lot's of bad examples & the insurance is high for what it's worth... I still have strong feelings for them though... kind of like the 951- three times the amount of cons as pros, but, I still like it.... All cars are bad investments, right....? Just pick the one you like if you're going to be paying for it... I hate new cars too though... too much electronic BS.... I will only win if I can make enough $ to build something from the ground up myself.....
