Not a stupid question and not an easy answer.
Basically if you run a turbo so that the system requirements fall out side the left hand side of the compressor map it will get unstable. This ends up with very unstable performance and can do a great deal of damage to the turbo over time. Generally this occurs at the initial turbo spool up (reduced flow requirements) and can clear up at higher flow loads.

In theory (in other words – me guessing) the compressor efficiency can be changed by bad bearings or some other situation that reduces the efficiency of the turbo causing it to run in to surge mode.

Chris White: Essentially this is what I was told could be my problem with my old turbo. This is why I bought the "new" unit. Well once this thing goes on I will see if my problem is fixed. If it is fixed I will still probably still sell the car. If you really are interested in the car let me know. I know you are on the other coast but I am sure you could find a way to get it home.

I have read most of this post and several others that you have posted. Do you still have the CV installed? It sounds like the klr is taking over to me. I have also seen DME's cause similar problems. KLR? Blow off valve? Routing for the vacuum hose for the Blow off valve, going to same line as fuel rail? Just some thoughts. Wish you luck with the car. I would be interested, but am several thousand miles away.

jlturpin: The CV is not installed. There is no KLR since I have the Wolf3D installed. I am not sure on the routing of the vacuum hose for the blow off valve because so much unnecessary stuff was removed from under the intake manifold. Sorry I couldn't answer that one. Hey you can always trailer the car back to where you live.

I am wondering if it will be a problem with your "new" turbo as well. I haven't seen/couldn't find a compressor map for a T04E-V trim, but if you look at a T04V-1/V-2 compressor map, it looks like you might run into the same problem. If you have your old turbo out, you can take off the compressor housing, measure the compressor wheel diameters and figure out what trim the old turbo is.

Rob: The thing is that I never had this problem with my turbo before the install of the Wolf3D and the fixing of multiple boost leaks. I was told that I may have oversped the turbocharger with all of the boost leaks. This would accelerate the wear of the bearings and could even have compressor wheel rub. Thus the lack of boost at 3500K RPM. Now that the boost leaks are fixed the turbo is giving me issues due to damage caused by the previous leaks. This is why I was told that a new turbo would do the trick.

iborroel, if you're that close, why not just take it the rest of the way? youll be so much happier when you get it done. ive almost gotten rid of mine several times. once this new clutch is in, and ive got this motor rebuilt and good to go, itll be totally worth it.

If the vacuum hose is not routed to a port on the manifold, past the throttle body it will NOT work correctly. Check this, may be too simple but worth a try.
