Default What is an aftermarket coil good for?

Just what the title says: what is better about an aftermarket coil than the stock one (MSD Blaster or whatever), and do I need one?

Inoticed asubtle difference but then, I was using Magnecor wires and hadpretty fresh plus, cap, and rotor. The idle felt a little more stable and it reved just a little easier. I think there was a small improvement.

It's not that expensiveso give it a try.

Aftermarket ones help your beer from tipping over better.

Ok well let me put my question a bit differently: what are aftermarket coils supposed to be good for?

Increased spark energy due to a larger voltage. 45kV for the MSD while the stock coil is rated at 30kV. The increased spark energy is supposed to provide a more efficient combustion.

Stick to stock coil. Some high energy coils do a job on the cap & rotor.
Best approach is to convert to wasted spark with coil packs or coil over plug. In the past you had to go to standalone for this type of conversion. Soon, you will be able to do it with the Motronic

Does this mean you will be telling us more about this ability in the near future?

i have the blaster 2. I had a huge difference, but it may have something to due with the stock one being shot... stock = violent stumbling on boost. Blaster = ahh, much better... I figured since its replacing might as well... that and it was cheaper... only grip is its to small to fit in the stock place without having to do something to get it in.

In order to take fullest advantage of a higher kV rating you'd have to (1) have longer gap for a longer spark jump and (2) fatter wires for lower resistance.

Hmm.. well the way i see it my stocker coil probably has 170K or so on it.. I think thats "well used" at this point..

so I went ahead an ordered a blaster-2 from summit and 2 sets of fresh plugs ngk BPR7ES
it was only like $60 shipped..

cant beat that..

I am pretty sure i have a bad plug in my motor somewhere.. and i am running 14-15 lbs of boost so the slightly cooler plugs is a good idea as well..
