so why is my turbo smoking
well **** if I know.
what I do know is that it has about a whopping 200 miles OR LESS miles on it.
and it's smoking.
fairly sure that I didn't suck anything in, maybe there was something already in the system (my last turbo sucked in some rubber and sent an arsenal of rubber bits all throught!)

The first thing to check on a smoking 951 is the crankcase vent vacuum.
In my opinion, there has been many 951s rebuilt for needless things when the turbos simply weren't able to drain properly.

i smoke randomly sometimes... I just realized i left my crank breather hose un tightened into the j boot, but it was inserted all the way... what else could it be? Sometimes it will smoke at idle after driving, reving brings more smoke... shut it off, turn it on 10 seconds later, and no smoke.

Abnormally high crankcase pressure (bad rings or crankcase not venting properly) causes the turbo not to drain properly. A turbo that does not drain properly will eventually flood and smoke (might even get damaged).
This is not the only reason for a smoking turbo, however it's one I have seen plenty of lately.

the weird thing is, my IC pipes and intake tract has remained very clear of oil since I last put it together about 1200 miles ago when the head went on... I mean theres residue, but thats really about it... seems like the J boot is dirtier then the IC pipes.
Could it be that at 18 psi, it blows the oil through and doesn't allow it too pool?

What kind of oil ??
I had problems with my TT 928 buildup partially because they crank at such a high oil pressure. also I was told not to run synthetic oil until the turbo seals were broken in. When I changed the oil that fixed it. At the time I was running mobil one.
Either that or its crankcase pressure. I know of one guy down here that pumped about a quart of oil into his cat.

how do I check that?
the car was running so poorly that it was going under boost (severe load) just to barely move.
backfires, pops, jerking, stumbling, and uncontrollable boost abound (misfiring too?)
it was utterly chaotic.
I pulled over and there was gray smoke coming from the turbo
I was far too pissed off to look into it at the time, I'll check into it tom.
thanks for the replies.

Since the throttle body is DOWN STREAM of the mist seperator inlet to the J-Boot, oil drawn through the mist seperator will show up in the J-Boot and not in the UP STREAM plumbing.
