Does anyone know if the '89 944's qualify for historical status or any other special registration (i.e. license plates) in California? Are there pros/cons to having your car registered as such? I'm curious if it will help or hurt my insurance rates (I could see my registration fees going down, but then my insurance rates going up because it's a 'rare' car). Just wondering ... Thanks!

I believe the Turbo S cars classify for a special status in California, however I am unsure about the others. Since I dont personally live in CA I wouldnt know about the cost differences. Hopefully another Cali boy will be able to give you more concrete answers then I can.

Well, according to the DMV and CVC 5004, the car would have be of at least 25 years old and of historical interest (ie operated primarily for the purpose of display and historic vehicle club activities). I'm not sure what advantages it buys you, actually....

Knowing the DMV, I'm sure there's an additional fee for the application and re-registration, probably an additional "special processing fee" and probably a "non-standard-process fee" and an "uncommon form utilization fee".
Sorry, I'm feeling especially cynical today. . .

According to the DMV, a special interest vehicle is less than 2,000 units sold.

I looked into this once, but couldn't find out how many 944 turbos were sold in CA by year. If we can make a case that they are special interest they should be smog exempt. I would imagine this would impose some mileage limitations though.

Of those, 700 were delivered to the US for sale.
My car is #1330 (last four numbers on VIN)

Thanks guys! Smog exempt status could be a good thing. I'll have to check in with the DMV to see if there are any change of fees and also with the insurance company. I'll be sure to post back to let everyone know.
