Default Check your Intercooler ducting

I was recently informed that someone making gobs of HP is not using the stock intercooler plastic "funnel" or ducting.. The ducting is a MUST to direct the air to your intercooler, otherwise the IC becomes a simple heat sink. So now that warm season is around the corner, double check and make sure the ducting is there and while at it clean the intercooler from debris.

If someone has a spare plastic ducting, please let me know, I think SpecialTool will appreciate it (not that he would consider running without the ducting!!!! )

I have a template somewhere that I used to cut my IC ducting out of sheetmetal for my vented nose. Rennlister eslou (sp?) sent it to me, if I can find it, it's yours SpecialTool.

David, why do you have the duct off. That's how you get air to the intercooler.. I know you have the cutout, but I would keep the factory unit in place and just cut holes in it for the nose panel.

I've been exorcising the demons out of my ignition and fuel systems, with marginal success....

Hos, a lot of pushing, pulling, and cussing is all that worked for me. Do you have the ic off or just the ducting?

I'll second John's quote, lots of squeezing, twisting and pushing. With warm temps you don't have to worry too much about breaking it but be careful. It's another one of those why did the factory do it this way questions.

Pulling, pushing, squeezing and enough swear words to make one's grandma blush........

The IC was taken ou for cleaning around 6 months ago, i never installed the ducting back on. Untill i read John's post on it scoops air rather than just air flowing around it (heat soak and all).

The question is not why did the factory do it this way, it is HOW did they do it

Hos I've only done this way so there may be others out there with a different/better approach so ymmv. Since your ducting is out, pull the ic and then install the ducting without the ic in the way. Now the fun part. Hold the ic with the inlet/outlet pointing down and push down while rotating it into position. The plastic will deform quite alot without damage, you may need to use a pick or screwdriver end to pull the top part out from the front of the ic. It's really more brute force and determination than anything. If you do tear the plastic you could use duct tape to seal it but I've had mine out several times without screwing up the plastic.

There is also some weatherstripping material that seals the bottom and the front side of the ic to the ducting that should be replaced.

I did this job last year... and it was a bit difficult to remove the ducting but possible. As many other people said, you have to be a bit brutal with it but it's not really fragile (be careful anyway)
