Default running leaner than a starving kid in africa *update on pg 3*

so the car is officially back to stock.
except the turbo and a few other things.

the spark plug wires were arcing so I replaced them.
the coil wasn't giving spark so I replaced it.

now the car runs fine, except it's running really lean.

15-16 A/f at idle and 18-20 everywhere else.
unless it's boosting in which it runs stoic.

what the hell?
what would make it run lean all the time except when under boost?

weltmeister chips
stock injectors
afpr (2.3 bar)
t04e/6 turbo
zeitronix wideband
stock afm
3" exhaust no cat
tial wastegate

no vacuum leaks (pretty confident)

Well your turbo is pushing more air than the chips are mapped for...

no.
that is the exact opposite of:

"what would make it run lean all the time except when under boost?"

in which it would run lean only when under boost, not the other way around.

maybe it has something to do with the dme?
when the klr takes over (under boost) it runs fine.
(I think that's how it works)

Eric,
The KLR doesn't control fuel mapping at all, that is all the DME's job.

When you say it runs "stoic" on boost, do you mean 14 or 12:5?

IIRC at idle you should dither between 13-16ish, and be around 14 when off boost cruising.

What all did you remove to bring it back to stock?

it runs about high 12's to 13 a/f under boost.
and about 18-20 off boost
and 15-16 at idle (gets choppy the leaner it gets)

ok so the klr doesnt do the fuel, what changes:
what parts does the dme use or not use only when under boost?
(does it still use/ not use the 02 sensor, tps, etc etc.

I removed the MAF and pro m tuner, vitesse chips, and 55# inj

You double checked your AFM voltage at the DME? No wires crossed or anything? FQS is at 0 (stock)?

to test the voltage, will it be 0-5 volts? going up or going down? does it change with the a/f or with the throttle?

wires crossed? everything is back to stock. I don't think the harness wires would get crossed

I don't know anything about the fqs!
(i thought that was inside the chip)

The FQS is in the DME and can be accessed through a small black plug on the side of the DME. There is a rotary 8 position switch with a triangular recess that you need to turn. Here is a link to the stock settings. http://www.promax.uku.co.uk/fqs.htm

Some MAF kits make you splice into the harness.. didn't know if you had to or not.

For the AFM.. http://frwilk.com/944dme/afm.htm You'll learn a little of it's function and how to test it.

The little hole in the bottom left corner of your DME hides the FQS.
Shave a golf tee, or something like it, into a triangle shape to use as the tool.
I think you want it in the complete counter clockwise position, but please check that first.

I just checked-
the fqs is set at 0.

the car did this with the MAF too (run lean)
which makes me want to think that it isn't the afm.
(but I don't know)

I think the original afm harness was left alone (I don't think it was hacked into)
I will check though

33psi at idle is fine. Have you checked voltages to and from the TPS? Perhaps the closed throttle switch is stuck closed and you remain on the idle maps.

haven't checked that, no.
I'm not sure how to even check the voltages.

but wouldn't it idle fine then? it's running lean at idle.

how do I tell if the 'closed throttle switch' is stuck closed?
