Default Ceramic Coating the headers... Keep the stock headshields on?

I see that under the headshield thats wrapped around the header pipes there seems to be some sort of white insulation mat? Should I just leave the heatshield on and ceramic coat that? Any extra benefits?

It is asbestos, leave the heat shields on and get them coated.

I think you're supposed to coat the inside, not the outside. Who's going to do it for you?

For that you can do either or both. The problem with doing the inside is that its near impossible to get a proper coat, so eventually itll start to flake and peel off... Little flakes of ceramic going through the turbo makes for an unhappy turbocharger At least this is what ive been told, and as far as I know this is Swaintechs feelings too.

As far as whose doing it, its a place called "Kool Coat" in Langley BC. Its $186 for the headers, but im going to prep them myself to save money (I hope ) then for the crossover its $25 a foot or so. This is for 2000 degree F coating, and its black

By the time these cars were built asbestos had already become a dirty work. I took my shields of and saw somebody who works in industrial insulation. He advised me they are made from a type of mica made into mats that doesn't have the dangers of asbestos. Anybody know more about these new types of insulation?

I found several cracks hidden under the heat shield so I'm glad that I removed mine.

I personally think the little "flake" is a bit of snakeoil. The engine you will see in the pic is jwl's 2.5L as it came out of his car, 8-9k miles on an in the car rebuild. The whole exhaust system was coated with Jet Hot Sterling 1200. There was still a lot of coating in the manifolds, the crossover pipe after being wiped out was almost as new, as was the turbo down pipe. The turbo was smooth as silk and there was nothing on the back side to indicate any flaking from anything.

Anyway, the exhaust manifolds are in excellent shape and this car was played with pretty hard, taking advantage of the Vitesse Stage II. That engine is now a 2.8L and the same manifolds were installed, just cleaned up a bit.

2.8L built

but as you can see, the shields were left on and offer almost a 200° reduction in temps from factory temps, I have the laser temp data at home.

Ski,
Are the insides of the manifold coated w/ Jet Hot sterling too? I've gotten some pre turbo stuff ceramic coated but I always use the 2000+ deg stuff (either Jet Hot or Performance Coatings) for anything before the turbo. EGTs can easily exceed 1400 deg before hitting the turbo.

Yes they are. Most things have a safety margin and I would expect the Sterling 1200 does too. I think even the tiny amount of real silver that's in it, helps it stretch with heat and return to normal condition at cool down...but that's just MHO.

I know the gases get hot but the inside of these things looked really good because Jim even said he was surprised. I wish I had some pics but I don't. I will be taking my 12k mile engine out in the fall so I'll take some pics then and see what I find too.
