Default Engine rebuild kits?

Not sure if I have to do it yet. But I think my piston rings are done for. If I pull the motor, I'd like it to go in as new as possible, so I'm starting my research. Anyone know of a good, complete rebuild kit? I'll also consider sleeving the block too. Anyone have a complete rebuilt motor for sale? like a 2.7 or something?

I just ordered everything from Jason at Paragon. Brace yourself money-wise; it's gonna hurt

zims had a good price on a total rebuild kit.

i paid a little less than $900 for all the seals/gaskets, bearings, rings, water pump, and valve guides. racewear hardware was another story...

$1200 for everything, I just got my stuff. Rings, bearings, seals from paragon. I got ARP hardware from EBS in Nevada, 1/2 the price of racewear.

EBS is a really cheap supplier... it all depends how deep and what quality you want.

While were on the subject. Are oem rings worth the extra money or will aftermarket ones do the trick?

Which aftermarket ones? Total Seal has a good set, but they don't have a 3-piece top ring.

I am in the process of rebuilding a spare 88TS motor. When I started tearing it down, I was only going to replace the rod bearings, but have now decided to do the mains and rings as well. Because the planning happened as a progression, I did not order the parts in one rebuild kit, but have ordered them as individual part sets and pieces from a mail order dealer and from Paragon. If you are going to do everything completely new, I would guess that the kits are the way to go. However, I do have some concern over the quality of the aftermarket brands versus OEM on some of the larger pieces (rubber o-ring and seals are no big deal).

I will probably post this as a separate thread also, but what rings are you guys using for 951's?

It seems that most suppliers sell the 944 103 902 82 ring set for all cars including the turbos. But this is the plain 944 and 944S ring set. According to factory part numbers, the turbo is supposed to use 951 103 901 02. I spoke with a local shop and with Paragon, and they both said that they only use/sell the 944 part numbers, and that the 951 rings list over $130 per piston, while the other 944 rings list around $100 per set of 4 (FYI, Paragon has lower prices than the dealer list price).

So I now have a set of the 944 rings made by Goetze. When I compare them to the original rings (Im assuming they are the OEM 951 parts), they look very different. The original oil scraper ring is two piece, the Goetze is three. And the scraper itself is quite a different design. The orginal 2nd compression ring is constant thickness, the goetze has a step in it so the edge in contact with the cylinder wall is thinner than the base.

Is this normal? And any concern for use in a 951?

the correct part # is 951.198.901.02. I bought a set three years ago from vertex for $90. try them or EBS. EBS sold me a set of 964 rings for $85 three years ago as well.

Looking my catalog, Vertex is one of the vendors that sell the Goetze rings and lists the same parts for both the 944 and 944 turbo.

From what I can find, 951 198 901 02 does not show up as a real Porsche part number, where did you locate that?

Page 38 of the Parts and Technical Reference Manual.

My Vertex invoice lists 951.103.901.02. Maybe there has been a supercession?

What part number are you saying is the correct one for the 951 rings? 951 103 901 02 or 951 198 901 02? PET shows the 951 103 901 02, but I cant find the 951 198 number in the sequenced price listing at all.

Spoke with a p-car shop owner yesterday at a track event, and he said the difference is that the turbo rings are chromed, and do not use the 944 rings in a turbo, especially for a track car, they will crack.

I never saw an engine rebult "kit" that came with balance shaft bearings, to me that should be "part of the package".

The more recent part # is 951.103.901.02, so that should be a good number.

The Parts and Technical Reference Manual by PCNA has several mistakes in it, and this may be another one. The wrist pin bushings are incorrectly listed as well, updated oil pan pictures are reversed, updated t-stat seal and a few others I have noticed. It is still a great reference though.
