Regarding the 3rd gear acceleration, I suppose the slower but more sustained 3rd gear acceleration feels better than the ultra quick but very short lived acceleration from 3.5-6K rpm in 1st and 2nd gear!

1st gear: Shotgun, hold the steering tight
2nd gear (half a second later): WHOOOOO
3th gear: This thing accelerates forever!
4th gear: Did I tension the belts correctly?
5th gear: ..how can we know, we never get there!

Regards,
Chris

2 things

1 Shorter drive ratio
2. Will explode if used extensivly in a modded turbo

But what fun until it does Just dropped (not literally, thank you) the 83B transaxle from my 87 944S parts car. Very nice mod for NA racers, 944 Cup etc. Has the same first four ratios of a 951 box with the final drive of an NA. Alas, not a good idea for Turbo folks, ring and pinion are not hardened, nor is the box beefed up like the 951S.

Every now and then one sees 944 race cars for sale with 4:11 gears. Anybody know whether this is a factory available delivery option, or just an available gear set over the counter?

The S2 box is just as strong as the 951. I have 20, 80-lap track days and 1000's of miles on one. And this was at "other than stock power levels"

There is a BIG, BIG difference between the 2.5 S box and the 3.0 S2 box.
This is from experience - I have a 2.5 S box in my SCCA 924.

FWIW, this article:
http://www.944fest.com/media/CandD.html
Talks about a 88 Turbo S that was delivered new with a different (3.89:1) gearset. I'm not sure if it was a factory or a dealer mod, but it was done. I wonder if the current owner knows what he's got?

ah thanks for telling me I can sleep now.

which 917 is it if you dont mind me asking. 917-30? 917-K? I only ask cause I hear the later models were much faster than the early ones.

it was just nuts to see that thing get from 60-120 so fast. He was getting wheels spin at 60mph!
