Default Holy S&%T! Turbo S anti squeal shims!

I'm going to put new front pads on my car, so I went to the dealer to get those anti squeal shims. He said they are ~$35 each, so around $140 for the set! That's nuts! Is that the goiing price, or can I get them somewhere else for less? Or does anyone know if any of the shims from other models might work instead of these?

Can't we run them w/o shims? I'm currently using 993 calipers w/o shims without a problem (yet....) Those guys seem to regularly run w/o shims.

Anyone know?

Try it without the shims first. If you get squealing, then try the shims. Mine squealed like crazy without shims. It's much less with shims, but not completely gone. It seems to take some black magic to get rid of squeal on some cars.

I just bought some for the front of my Turbo S from Pelican:
Anti-Squeal Pad Inserts, Set of four BR-AS-004 $8.15

You'll need to trim them just a very little bit for a perfect fit (exacto knife or razor blade works well). Pretty much completely eliminated my front squeel. Unfortunately, now I can hear the rears squeling...guess I should have ordered the set of eight.

as Evan says. just pick up a set from your local shop. they're just self adhesive rubber/plasticy things. And they do the job!. IIRC the porsche parts have the piston inserts in, which I've had no problem living without for the last 5 years. Makes pad changes easier too.

Don't forget some copper grease in there too.....

yeah - the price is insane.

Just to clarify, we're talking the steel shims screwed to the piston inserts - not the adhesive rubber plastic times some have referred to - yes?

The pad change issue alone is worth the effort to delete them. Otherwise, dont you have to remove the caliper to get the pads out? . . . Not worth it.

I already had the steel shims that insert into the pistons, and they weren't doing anything to stop squeel. Of course, maybe that's because mine were no longer attached to the pads? I added the adhesive rubberized backing to the pads and that stopped the squeel. If the metal shims are loose from the pads you don't have to remove the caliper to get them out. Personally, for the costs difference and the pain of changing pads with them, I'd forget the metal shims and just try the adhesive backed anti-squeel pieces first.

I agree with Jake on the black magic. My Pagid orange's initially squealed like a pig when cold (as expected), then after running stock pads for a while between club events, the oranges are running almost as quiet as stock so i havn't bothered to change them back again at this stage.

You can use any anti-squeal paste, instead of shims.

I guess I'll just buy those ones from pelican. It didn't even occur to me that it might be possible to revome the pads without removing the calipers.

Another advantage of no shims: easier to swap out pads.
